It was below freezing today so that means it was time to go out in the yard and shoot hummingbirds.

This male Anna's hummingbird is on watch and thinks he owns the place. Diligent no matter what the weather.

I also got the macro out to take mug shots.

First of his highness...

An also of a female that slipped through his surveillance to try out the feeder...

Very nice. How close were you for the last two? The detail shown is incredible.

About two feet away. It's with a 100mm macro and is cropped. They are sitting on a feeder and are more tolerant of me when it's below freezing. We usually only have a couple of weeks each winter when it's cold enough for me to try.

This is another shot of the male from today. I've run into this problem in past years. If he turns his head so the sun makes his head glow then the depth of field can't contain his bill because I'm so close.

Beautiful shots! You mentioned in one post that you were only two feet away for some of the shots. does the shutter not scare the birds? I used to take shots of hummingbirds with my 7D but they would fly away at the shutter clicks. (very amateur in the animal kingdom, people are my specialty). I haven't tried yet with my 5D3 on silent though. What body do you use?

I use a 7D. The male is especially tolerant of the camera. He's been around at least three years (possibly more) and I've taken pictures of him in all kinds of situations. The key with him is getting him to perch on something lower down instead of the very top of the birch tree which is his favorite viewing spot.

As I said above, they are especially tolerant of me when it's below freezing because they don't like to move around as much and come to the feeders on a regular schedule. The female seemed unconcerned about me and was more worried about watching for the male to come around and chase her off the feeder.

This is the male in September when he was molting. He's sitting a water hyacinth plant.

Must be nice to have hummers in the winter!

Well Done.

I do not think that the shot of the male with the shallow depth of field is bad at all. As a matter of fact I think it helps add some depth to the shot.
