The prices have skyrocketed from launch. Every time they changed the coating formula they added another 2K or so.

Like I said, I never should have sold mine. I could triple my money now.

Still, an updated version with IS and an inbuilt TC would be the ultimate wildlife lens, going up to 112mm f/8. Just pair it with a 70-200 for close subjects and you're set!

I meant OS and Sport based on how Sigma price it now. CDS is right. I should have gotten one when I had the chance.

Before seeing this, I would not have thought that Canon would release a 500/5.6 at less than $4000. Hopefully Canon follows suit with something comparible. I'd jump all over that lens if I had a Nikon set up.

I have one. It works great. Just add a 2X TC to my 300L and wala.

Anyway, just discovered that Nikon has a Zoom 200-500mm f5.6 at US$1400.
If the IQ is as good as EF100-400 II - selling for US2200. I think Canon has lost the plot if it does not at least respond in kind or come up with a competitive lens.

Meantime, I would readily buy a Sigma Sport 500mm f5.6 if the IQ and AF is on par with its other Sport/Art lenses. I would be willing to pay US$2500-3k. But if it was priced at US$2000 - I would think it would sell out real fast (on the supposition that it would have better IQ and AF than the nikon's 200-500 f5.6).

Despite what seems obvious, appearances can be deceiving. I understand the the AF of the Canon is light years better than the new Nikon. Haven't heard on IQ or IS (VR) yet.

Apparently the early shipment of the new Nikon was corrected in subsequent shipments. So the AF issues seems to be knicked. Also saw some images and they seem promising. I would love to read a comparison review - even though on two different platforms.
