There is someone in my area selling a lens that I'm very interested in. I own a Canon EOS Rebel T3 and the lens is defined as "Canon DSLR fixed 50mm lens." Here is a picture of it:

She said the lens was great for portraits (which is one of my favorite subjects) and sent me some images I was impressed with. The price is $60.

I'm an amateur with patchy knowledge of the technical aspects of cameras, so I'd like to know...is this a good deal? Is this lens even compatible with my camera?

(If this needs to go in a different forum, please don't hesitate to move it.)

In a nutshell- yes.

Its a traditional 50mm lens. On a crop sensor camer (the sensor is smaller than 35mm film), it will act like a portrait lens. These sell for about $110 new. They are cheap plastic build, but are of good optical quality.

You should buy this new IMHO. It is plastic and for the price I would not trust a used one. YMMV

Well that lens brand new is over $100 bucks, so you will be saving about $75 It's a good little lens, it took ver sharp photos. I just didn't like how cheap it felt. I would either go for that one or save up $350 and get a brand new 50.1.4

you can practically buy two used for the price of a new one though...and the only time the lens is messed up usually involves a drop, so there's no warranty coverage for drops new, or used..

save your money, and buy it used, and just don't drop it :)

it's a nice intro to fast primes for cheap

Thanks, all. After reading some articles about the versatility of the 50mm, I decided to get it and am pretty pleased with some of the shots I got tonight. :D

Good buy! This was my first fixed-focal (prime) lens and I loved it. Enjoy!

It's the only lens I have watched another tog drop to the ground from about chest height (fat finger fumbling) explode apart like a blow up diagram.
He picked up the pieces and over the course of a day sort of crammed parts back together and it worked. Everything worked...and it still does today some 8 years later.

I'm not recommending you do this just so you can see how it's made so to speak. But I still marvel that it works after all this time.

Lotsa stuff, running outta room and a wife...I keep looking at her and wondering???
