Firstly, thanks to those who helped resolve my AF setting problem.

Having come from a 6D to a 5D3 recently, I am noticing shadow noise at relatively low iso settings.

With my 6D 1600 iso was almost free of shadow noise. The 5D3 however, has noticable shadow noise at settings as low as 400.

I shoot in raw only and have all in camera functions turned off. IE no tone priority, sharpening, lens corrections or noise reduction etc.

I post process using Canon DPP and downloaded lens correction data and all the other stuff.

Should I be expecting this?
Is the 6D sensor that much better?
Is it possible I have a defective camera?

As soon as I get the hang of the interweb, I'll post some examples.
Until then, I'm keen to receive speculative advice or real world experiences.

Shouldn't be seeing much noise at ISO 400 unless you're under exposing your photos. Post some examples

This is the noise I'm getting from my 5D3 at ISO 400 with noise reduction in DPP set to zero, Brightness adjustment -0,67.
Image below is a 100% crop, because resizing would automatically reduce noise.

I can barely see noise in your picture.
I might try and reduce the brightness a bit and see if that does the job.

The noise I notice the most is generally in blacks/dark shadows.

As soon as I figure out how, I will post some examples for you to have a look at for me.

Thanks.

Reducing brightness on its own won't help. What helps is slightly overexposing in camera (without blowing important highlights!) which then calls for a brightness reduction in the raw converter to get the image brightness right.

Search this forum for "expose to the right" or "ETTR", that's how the method is called.

Is this shadow noise normal at iso 400?

If it is a 100% crop, it seems fine to me. If it is resized, it's impossible to tell, as resizing always reduces noise.

It is a 100% crop (I think).
So that's about normal then?

the 5D3 isnt going to be totally noise free. its not known for extreme noise performance or anything. those shots look normal. the 5D3 does extremely well in capturing overall awesome IQ which is why i bought and love mine as the newest workhorse in my kit :D

Still it's positioned pretty high within the Canon lineup in terms of noise, probably surpassed only by the 1DX and the 6D.

i agree totally. the thing that sets the 5D3 apart from those 2 is price against the 1DX and the fact thats its more of a workhorse than the 6D with a lot less limitation.

as far as other cameras in its price points that some may say isnt a complete fair comparison when you compare it outside the canon brand it does hold up in IQ against the D750 and even is comparable on quality but obviously not resolution to the pentax 645D which is medium format

Yes, that is what I would expect... Cannot see much noise in there. Only when severely under-exposed I see some shadow noise at ISO 400 (and even at ISO 100 for that matter). That is why I usually ETTR with half a stop and then correct in PP.
