A "maybe" full frame vs "most certainly heck yes from the very first shot" use of IS..

I'll take IS ;)

i was very intrigued by this lens when it was announced, but just couldn't wait for the release (and the price is a bit rich for me too); maybe i'll grab one after 6-8 months time.

The new 17-55IS is truly in a class by itself. There is simply nothing like it, period.

*smacks self*

This must be retribution for supporting EF-S. There was no such thing as having to worry about full frame on the horizon yesterday for me. Today there is. :o

Fortunately fStopJojo's sig has just reminded me that it is possible to, uhh, "modify" a 17-85. Must think about doing that.

so you're saying since you'd take apart the 1785IS you'd do the same to the 1755IS? Thats crazzzzzy...lol. I still like the 16-35 better...esp if you have the 2470L and the 70200ISL...it'd make more sense...

i just bought the lens, and i love it! i believe it is truly a league of its own. for one it is IS and also, it is 2.8. As for the 16-35, i think it falls short on the long end and is without IS. the built is definitely not L, but sturdy enough. for the price it should have at least better build and weatherproofing, although i got it at promo price of just about $1000. happy!

I chickened out, I decided to buy the 24-105, therefore eliminating the need to perform surgery on either EF-S lens to 'adapt' it to my 5D.

As for a decision between the EF-S 17-55 and EF 17-40, this decision's quite straightforward. Approximately 2X the cost buys one an image stabilizer (tremendously useful), and a larger aperture (always useful) at the cost of well, the cost. ;) and the 17-55 is not full frame compatible. If your budget permits, go for it.
