Frequency Separation Retouching

Exploring Frequency Separation Retouching. I was happy with the results. Here's the tutorial I was following: http://www.youtube.com​/watch?v=ldhG9fmgC7o#t​=793 There are several others.

200mm, 1/125 @ f4.5, iso 800
Yongnuo yn-560 iii through a 60" umbrella, camera right.

I like the picture and the lighting, but the overtouching looks over-cooked. There is no texture left on the skin at all. But the tonality and gradients are fantastic.

I included a before so you can see how much texture I began with. Yes, I see what you're saying and you can certainly dial it back if wish. I just chose not to for this exercise. Happy to have one more thing to add to my pp toolbox. Since posting I have discovered there are other threads on this technique here.

I think you need a different face to experiment with this technique, the one you have here is too perfect

Slightly overtouched...but otherwise great shots!

I think she's very pretty and love the eyes. I would like to try this technique on a subject with more skin texture and with different lighting to really see how it works. Also, this photo had more noise than I really wanted. A cleaner original would have probably shown more texture.

I think the left pic still looks better.

I think there is a time and place for frequency separation. Looks like you have it down but this is not the type of image i would do it on. Looks out of place to subject matter. High end very formal potraits and fashion shots are where FS shines.

Looking again at the "before", I tend to agree!

Would love to see some more extreme before and after examples of this technique if anyone has any to share.
