I dont know why but my 135 doesnt seem to focus properly when the subject is relatively far away, say 30 meters or something.

The challenge of shooting exciting photos of the awfully boring sport of dressage, i did it this way from the very top of the arena with the 135.

I really like this ... it's quite surreal (like dressage itself). Have you tried a different crop (excuse the pun!)? ... so that there is more space in front of the horse and rider than behind them. I'm not suggesting 'rule of thirds' composition. I just think that the image might be more balanced with the subject a little right of centre.
