It is pretty simple and I discovered it by accident. I load my RAW file into Photomatix Pro 5 and do a fake HDR. I usually use painterly but try others depending on the shot. Sometimes others are too much. What HRD does is bring out all types of micro detail with unique contrast and colour. I figure you can use any HDR converter.
I do my resizing and sharpening and then convert to B&W using this and go through all the colour filters. Any B&W method would do the job.

(Lately I have been over sharpening a bit as I made a change to my process which I corrected to today. I use two actions which include PS downsizing. I use Bicubic or Bicubic Sharper depending on the image. Sharper for birds and bicubic for structures.)

I chose Magenta this time to get the sky a little darker. There is another window "print" where I can set blacks, highlight, etc. As yo can see you can select film types as well.
Final product. It is like a box of chocolates because I never know what I will get and often I can't reproduce it exactly the same as I did the first time.
