With the 100L Macro. Spectacular lens, just wasn't a great fit for me. Got some great shots while I had it though!

Hi all,

I photographed a friends wedding at the weekend. One of the photos turned out with a black band across the top, do you have any idea why? Is it strange the the chandelier can still partially be seen? I took about 950 pics, just the one like this. I've checked both cards and it recorded this data on both the SD and the CF card.

The scene was mostly lit by the 580 which i think was bounced off the wall/ceiling behind me.

Happily the pic wasn't up to much anyway but I'm a tad worried for the future, any thoughts would be appreciated.

5D iii and 24-70...

Something to do with sync speed. You can see the lights but everything else for that fraction of a second the shutter was passing that spot is underexposed.

Thans for the reply Randy. Hmm, yep I guess the chandelier is from the abient light. Ss was 1/125 though, so I didn't think sync speed would be a problem?

Hmm. I'm sure someone else will chime in. I don't know the ins and outs of flash photography that well, but I'm sure from what we see there that it was related somehow to the flash and the shutter. Perhaps it was a flash recharge issue?

Here is some reading. Did you have any manual settings set in the flash? There is also a setting to fix sync at 1/250, which could cause you to see the curtains.

From my experience of sync issues, any dark bands tend to have a softer edge, this looks very different having such a hard edge, and with the shutter being that slow. Can't say I've ever seen anything like it, fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

I agree, they also are usually a bit diagonal I think. Not dead 90 degrees.

If you post it in the flash forum those guys are all geniuses and they would likely be able to identify if it is a flash problem easily.

These are from the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa; we were expecting rain on the wedding day so we booked this as a backup option for photos. The rain never came, but the promise of air conditioning proved too much so we moved inside anyway. There were some heavy restrictions (some art pieces couldn't be in photographs) but still a sweet venue for photos.
