The lens barrel has a lot of play in it. It is a "cheap" kit lens. But it performs well. I can even use mine as a dust pump instead of using the zoom ring.
The lens barrel play seems to be common with this lens, but doesn't seem to effect anything at all.
Although it's certainly not an L-series, the 28-135 really is not a typical "cheap kit" lens either. Sure, a lot of them have been sold in kit with certain camera models, but it is actually a good, reliable design dating back to the film days. Still sells new for nearly $500, though there are so many around that were sold in kit it's easy to find one lightly used for $200 or less. At times Canon themselves offers refurbs with certain camera models for $100, via their online store. You can currently buy one brand new for $100, in kit with a 7D at B&H.
One of the first Canon lenses to get IS (2-3 stop's worth), it also has fast, accurate USM focus and is quite close focusing. The 28-135 rivals 24-105L in most respects (all but build/sealing), and comes surprisingly close to image quality of 24-70L.... for a whole lot less money.
Yeah, it's often got zoom creep. But sometimes so do 24-105 and even 24-70, too.
It's the Rodney Dangerfield of Canon lenses... doesn't get no respect. But it gets the job done and does it well, for 1/3 or 1/4 the price of comparable lenses.
