I have the above lens and the front lens group is loose. If you hold the filter area you can lift it at least 1/16" before it stops, separate from the rest of the lens. Is this the norm for this Canon lens?
It was a used lens like new and was loose when I bought it. I didn't notice before it was too late.
Thanks,
David

I had this same lens, i don't have it anymore, but the front element did have some play. Might wanna search that on google and see if others have the same problem.

Hmmm. I'll have to try this when I get home tonight. I know it's got terrible creep, but I don't know about this.

Mine rattles, and gravity zooms at about 3 degrees. Still quite good on a 6D, though. No way I'd sell it for the paltry $175 or so it is worth.

Same. Liked it on the 40D, and it's even better on the 5DIII. Very usable focal range. I still plan on getting a 24-70 (Tamron), but I'll also keep the 28-135 for use on a second body or as a back-up.

Ditto on all points. The front end is loose too. I've been planning on trying to repair the gravity zoom, as it is quite annoying.

Have you tried just putting a rubber band around the base of the zoom ring, just so it touches the bottom of the zoom and top of the focus ring? It isn't real attractive, but it keeps the lens from auto-zooming.

That's one of the fixes I've seen... Trying to avoid that one, but may have to resort to it

Use a red rubber band -- it will turn the lens into an "L". ;)

The lens barrel has a lot of play in it. It is a "cheap" kit lens. But it performs well. I can even use mine as a dust pump instead of using the zoom ring.

I did this for a few of my lenses. The 28-135 has been over 3 years with the same elastic and it is basically invisible and got rid of the creep. Also did this with the 15-85.

The lens barrel play seems to be common with this lens, but doesn't seem to effect anything at all.

Although it's certainly not an L-series, the 28-135 really is not a typical "cheap kit" lens either. Sure, a lot of them have been sold in kit with certain camera models, but it is actually a good, reliable design dating back to the film days. Still sells new for nearly $500, though there are so many around that were sold in kit it's easy to find one lightly used for $200 or less. At times Canon themselves offers refurbs with certain camera models for $100, via their online store. You can currently buy one brand new for $100, in kit with a 7D at B&H.

One of the first Canon lenses to get IS (2-3 stop's worth), it also has fast, accurate USM focus and is quite close focusing. The 28-135 rivals 24-105L in most respects (all but build/sealing), and comes surprisingly close to image quality of 24-70L.... for a whole lot less money.

Yeah, it's often got zoom creep. But sometimes so do 24-105 and even 24-70, too.

It's the Rodney Dangerfield of Canon lenses... doesn't get no respect. But it gets the job done and does it well, for 1/3 or 1/4 the price of comparable lenses.
