I was looking at the Canon 5D MarkII on a well known site and, it was listed at $1629 US.
It was graded as in excellent condition and a battery and charger are included.

On the same site, the Canon 6D is listed for $1589.
Also graded as in excellent condition and battery and charger included as well.

Does it make sense that the older model camera is more expensive than the newer model?
I know it's only $40 in the difference but, I thought the Mark II would be the cheaper of the two.
Actually, I thought it would be considerably cheaper.

Does the Mark II do something better than the 6D to justify the higher price?

Just curious as I think i'll be getting my first full frame in the new year and I thought it was going to be the Mark II but, based on current prices of it, maybe not.

I paid less than that for my 5DII new. Something seems out of line there. Used 5DIIs have been advertised in the marketplace here for $1100.

The 6D is better in almost every way. The 5D2 is great, but you can find it much cheaper, $1200 or less.

Heya,

I commonly see decent 5D2's go for $1100~1200. I wouldn't buy one for $1500. I'd get the 6D instead in virtually all situations. You'll see a big divide between 5D shooters and 6D shooters. The 5D name carries weight and is often referred to as the "pro" camera, but it's just words. The 6D performs better, plain and simple and has better image quality and ISO performance. The only difference is shutter speed cap and size/weight/build.

Very best,

i had the 5D2 and have the 5D3.

the 6D's minimum shutter speed limit options is worth the price of admission.
the wifi toys are icing.

if the 6D was out before I got the 5D3, it's what i would be using.

Wow I paid WAY less than either of those for my 6D in kit form. Though I will admit I stumbled into a one in a million deal where the store sold them on line and not in store. Someone had returned it and since it was not a "in store item" so it was HIGHLY discounted..... Still had the factory seals on the box and the inner packing.

I would be looking here for good 6D, I see have seen a few recently for a bit less than what your quoting from the auction site

I called the online retailer and asked them why the price of the Mark II is higher than the 6D.
To my surprise, the person I talked to actually discussed it a bit and gave me some of their reasons as to what factors in to how they determine the selling price of their used gear.
One of the factors given is that there is still a big demand for the Mark II.
More of a demand for the Mark II over the 6D as it relates to this particular retailer.

I suspect what MaIVeauX said about the 5D name, plays a part as well.

I checked out a few more online retailers and prices for the Mark II and 6D are similar to the retailer I was dealing with.
The Canon refurb online store list the Mark II at $1759.20 US and the 6D at $1519.20

I know I can get the Mark II cheaper through private sales but, just not comfortable paying out at least over $1000.00 for something that doesn't have any kind of warranty.
I'll just have to keep playing the waiting game and see if the price comes down some more.

What feature of the 5DII is making you want it instead of a 6D? I love my 5DII but there are very few things about it that make it superior to the 6D, and several where it's inferior to the 6D.

The only thing I can think of is that it uses compact flash, which has a much higher write rate for raw videos.

Plus the 1/8000 shutter speed and a full magnesium body.
For video in magic lantern, it's better.

This will probably sound odd but, I have been following the Mark II thread here for quite a while(before the 6D thread came along)and a lot of the users have a lot of good things to say about the camera.
That has stuck in my head and once something gets stuck in there, it's hard to get out!

I know there are also some issues with the camera but I don't think those issues would be that big of a deal for me.
I'm not a professional photographer, just do it for a hobby.

Yes the 6D is probably a better camera in a lot of ways compared to the Mark II and, I'm also considering that as well.
One of the reason being night time photography.
I'm not doing night time photography at this point but, it's something that is of interest to me.

But, one of the reasons the 6D is a second place choice at this time is that I actually held one and, my hand felt kind of "cramped" around the grip, not the battery grip.
I have a Canon 40D and it seems to fit my hand better than the 6D and I'm use to the size and weight of the 40D.
Although I'm sure I could get use to the different grip feel and weight of the 6D.

I may have to go back to my local camera store and check out the 6D again and see how it feels holding it again.

Anyway, as weak of a reason(s) as it may seem, that's why I'm focused on the Mark II at this point.

I must admit that I haven't held the Mark II but, from what I've read, it's very similar to size and weight of the 40D.
So based on that, i'm assuming the Mark II would be more to my liking than the 6D as far as ergonomics go.

On the Canon refurbished site, the 5D2 is $1759 and the 6D is $1519. For whatever that's worth.

The 5D is a bit bigger than the 40D. But the 6D is reasonably close. The difference between them in ergonomics seems a silly reason to favor the 5DII.
