You are talking semantics, and not good marketing. The 5 series has a large and durable fan base. The 6D isnt that much better than the 5DII, in fact if you read the initial reactions to the 6D it was decidely mixed as many of the 6D stats were not an improvement on a 4 year old 5DII. So the 6D was not going to satisfy the 5D enthusiasts and it made no sense to abandon the 5D reputation in favor of a 3D, which has some marketing flaws due to people mistaking it for 3 dimensional capability.

Interesting that both my cameras (60D, 6D) were harshly panned when they first came out. I really like both of them. The similarity of controls makes my life easy, too.

A LOT of things are harshly judged when they come out, then gain popularity over time. This especially happens with cars, I've noticed, and especially when a company changes target market for a product, or a product line. It's easy to attack change.

The 6D got panned because it created a new category and many people expected it to be something it wasnt. The 60D sort of represented a betrayal of fans of the XXD line. Dont get me wrong, the 60D is a fine camera but canon made some decisions about features and ergonomics and feature set that departed from the expectations of the existing fan base. Many were on their third XXD body and the plastic bodied 60D with the changed dial pad, represnted a step backwards from what ghey came to expect.

AlanU -
I would have preferred 1/8000, but not at the expense of buying a 5D3. Lots of money for little return for a center-point snap-shooter like me. Funny, I never need 1/8000 on my 60D. It gets used mostly with the 15-85 and 70-200 OS.

If your using f/2.8 to f/4 (and variable aperture zooms) I would imagine you can squeeze by without hitting 1/8000 shutter speed. Requesting more shallow dof does happen from time to time with fast primes and this is where I guess I can always equip the primes with ND filters straight out of my gearbag.

Not slamming the 6d. Its definitely a potent package from canon for a very high percentage of shooting applications.

The 5dmk3's speed is a breath of fresh air. More snappy and responsive. The 6d is going to document majority of photo's I'd ever need to shoot. I don't rule it out but sure wished it had 1/8000.
