Sony is not making a single attempt to make non native lenses focus on their cameras, they want you to buy the native lenses. Third parties are the ones making retrofit adapters and unfortunately they don't have huge funds like Sony and Canon to put in the R&D.

Supposedly this camera focuses 30% better with the native lenses, not sure if that's for accuracy or speed.

Yet Sony bodies can AF non-native lenses using adapters, and Sony has also patented Z-axis sensor movements for focusing by moving the sensor and for flange distance adjustments, which would be only useful for non-native sensors.

Sony is late to the party - almost everyone who will ever have a large collection of glass already has a large collection of either Canon-mount or Nikon-mount glass. Also, a lot of Sigma, Zeiss, Tamron and other useful third-party lenses aren't available in Sony A-mount or E-mount. It would be exceedingly difficult for them to get people to sell their collection and switch to Sony (losing thousands of dollars in the process) even if they were to bring out a new, comprehensive and optically-excellent lens collection.

I wish Canon put stabilization inside of the cameras, but that would cost them money and they couldn't charge an extra $1,000 for adding it to a lens like they do now.

It also wouldn't work with mirrored systems.

If the sensor is stabilised, but the lens is not, then the image seen in the optical viewfinder would also not be stabilised, and what you see through the viewfinder will not be what is recorded on the sensor, since the sensor will be constantly 'out of alignment' due to the stabilisation.

I'm thinking they are using the R as the a9...

when they announced the a7 last year they did both a7 and a7R. this time its a7II and a9.

unless the R is coming later on after people get their hands on the a7ii... :P

Or just make it capable of quickly focusing non-native lenses.

As a cutting-edge electronics company but rank amateurs when it comes to making lenses, that's probably the easiest and best option for Sony.

I still wouldn't budge. The appeal is a smaller package that's equally as capable. If I still have to pack a Canon 70-200 I am not really saving any weight. Their bodies still seem one dimensional. Hopefully someday they will have the complete package.

I would think, if they're smart, that they would want to exploit every opportunity to sell their cameras. Being able to effectively use non-native lenses would help answer the elephant in the room issue: lack of native lenses. People want to buy into the system, but stumble on the lens options. I'm sure Sony wants people to buy their native lenses, but do people want to buy them? Thay are nice. I would love to buy them all, but they're not nice enough to get me to make that move.

Again, great camera, but still pretty pointless. Canon 6D has a better sensor, and you can buy two or three lightweight lenses in price of one zeiss 55/1.8. For me the biggest problem with these cameras are the batteries and lenses - A7 lasts at least 3 times less than 6D. and lenses are mediocre and overpriced. If Sony will come up with something with size and quality of Voigtlander 35/1.4 and autofocus, then it might be interesting. For now i'd still choose Canon for versality or Leica M9 for pleasure and small quality lenses.

better sensor? I would disagree.

But I will agree on the expensive lens. The best thing is that the zeiss lens are remarkable. still overprice though :P

Thanks, I needed a good laugh!
I won't knock the 6D sensor, but no, Canon's sensors are not "better". ;)

Otus is very nice
But the cheap and humble 1,8/55 AF just unbelievable FAST and accurate, which make it the BEST walk around lens for 'street photography' as David starts doing it :lol::lol:
