Lots of great stuff everyone, glad I didn't have to judge. I really like crazy shaped trees(hence my choice to photograph my scene) so that wouldn't have help me pick. I'm not sure how many times I've drove by the orchards in Northern California and wanted to stop and take photos but haven't for whatever reason but that proabaly would have brought EBG's shot to the top of my list.
I had a really hard time picking a shot this time. When I saw the subject name I thought I knew exactly what shot I wanted to use, a BW of a dead tree but when opened the thread and saw a bunch of single tree BW shots I thought go for something different and definitely not BW. I had planned using something I hadn't uploaded to flickr yet but next thing you know it's Tues night and I haven't looked for anything yet so it was down to what's already up.
It's funny that mention that the tree isn't a clear subject as that's the reason I changed my mind about the shot I was about to post instead(a recent vibrant shot with a green field, yellow hills with Oak trees behind it and a blue sky with some cirrus clouds).
Granted the one I ended up picking was the same thing, it's that tree that got me to stop to take a shot in the first place only to find all the other elements that I felt would make a better shot if included. As for the look on the shot it has a lot to do with the direction of light and not all of the marine layer had burned off. I chose BW because it helped bring back some attention to that tree and also made the birds stand out better. Funny thing is I stop by this area with the plan of mostly getting BIF but they were mostly just lounging around on the rocks behind the cliff the tree is on.
Anyway here's next weeks. I was going to do minimalist but I found that Jason C did that earlier this year.
