I have several photos of this bear, his left eye makes him not so photogenic in my opinion. I don't know exactly what was different about it, some kind of tick or injury, maybe he was just naturally ugly, I don't know. He was gorged on the elk calf, the remains laying there in the photo.

Nice shot! His eye looks like the same condition many dogs get called Cheery eye. Dogs need surgery to correct the problem.I'm guessing the bear is on his own!

Hmmm, I thought I posted a reply after KT29, don't know why it's not here, probably screwed up and it's on some other thread, I don't know. The photo was taken a while back, I was just looking through some older photos and found this series again and decided to post one of them. I think it must have been 100 yards or more, I used an 800mm Canon and 5D M2, and I did a little crop. It kind of look as if the bear is looking toward the camera and snarling, but it's just his weird eye (or eye lid is more accurate). I think he was probably looking straight ahead and his eyeball isn't even visible in the photo.

We saw this same incident in Yellowstone. Gruesome & awesome at the same time.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

SJC from VT, I finally had time to check on the cherry eye condition, it really does look the same. I also think you were right, the bear was/is likely on his own.

bigjohninva, thanks, appreciate the comment!

Maureen, I guess the saying it's a small world is true. Also the one that says "time flies", I checked the date and it was 06/06/2010. I was a good day for seeing bears, I believe we saw and photographed bears 5 or 6 times that day.
