Great thanks. I was leaning towards main camera trigger but it is good to get advice. Great work! Would love a pic or info on how you setup the remotes. Or suggestions/advice
I have it made when it comes to the overhead since I can simply just mount to the railing of the arena catwalk. I use two magic arms, one on the body, and the other on the lens foot. Anything that can become detached gets a safety cable. I use Pocketwizard Plus IIIs and a pocketwizard pre-release cable to trigger the remote, but anything else will work. I've used the ebay Pixel brand transceivers with good results.
Once everything is mounted, I just throw the camera in live view and have someone on the floor help me grab focus by holding something over their head, like a chair or broom or something. Once focus is set, turn of AF on the lens, and gaff tape focus/zoom rings so you don't accidentally change it or allow the zoom to creep. Stop down the lens as much as you reasonably can (I usually go to f/5.6 since the light is nice in my arena).
Always get to the venue early to set remotes up. The last thing you want to do is rush setting one up. And know all the rules both for the venue, coaches, and whoever sanctions the sport when it comes to remotes, especially for basketball (i.e. no backboard remotes during NCAA tournament).
I don't have a good recent setup photo, but here's the view (pulled from instagram):
