great capture!!!! Congrats!

Oklahoma set a new Division I record scoring 39 straight points during the first half.

You mean 39-0? wow, that's some serious defence :)

Aha! That's the wording I was looking for. Thanks! :) (it was late when I made that post!) They went on a 39-0 run. I was seriously feeling bad for the other team.

Nice shots, pretty bright venue to get ISO 1600 and 800, I am jealous.

Been a while since I posted in this thread. Winter break and traveling a week with the football team for a bowl game has kept me off the hardwood for a few weeks.

Attempted my first backboard remote today.... it didn't go so well. The game was a defensive battle and we scored a whopping 14 points in the second half and didn't attack the paint at all. Even if the action was better, the remote wouldn't have done well due to reflections. The GoBo I used wasn't big enough. I tried to go conservative with it to keep it from being noticeable, but it wasn't enough and ruined the shots. I need to play with the angle as well. Oh well... live and learn. I'll set another one up during conference play. I'll just be sure the opponent isn't a defensive juggernaut like Alabama.

The setup (GoBo needs to be longer and slightly wider):

The result (bad reflections at bottom and right):

Here's a couple from tonight's ugly overtime loss to unranked Kansas State.

Other than having a yellow-green tint, I think they look pretty good considering your equipment. Obviously, it's going to be difficult to shoot in these conditions at f5.6.
I like the action in #2 but the slow shutter speed makes the ball handler look a little soft.
And even though I wish the tips of his toes were in the image, I love #8!

My equipment is a major obstacle right now. I really need to get a 24-70 2.8 IS II and a 70-200 2.8 IS II. It is hard to rationalize the purchase when credentials are becoming harder and harder to get. Last year I shot the entire IU season. This year, one game. The Pacers removed half their photographers due to "safety" concerns after Paul George's injury, even though he hit a stanchion and not a photographer. smh Seems like if you aren't working for the team, USA Today, or the major paper in your city, you are left out to dry.

Thanks for the feedback. Usually I tweak the white balance to lose some of the yellow-green, but it's difficult to find something that looks "correct" because the floor is very yellow and it reflects onto everything giving it that hue. This time I left the white balance as is due to time constraints.

I made a mistake on the shutter speed on a few shots early as I was switching back and forth from action to portraits. #2 was one of them.

I usually get a shot like #8 once a game or so. It is one of my favs too. I will definitely remember to get the toes in next time. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, McNeese,
looks like you don't shoot with f/2.8 aperature on your Canon f2.8 70-200mm L II IS in any of these basketball photos, widest aperature I see you shoot at is f/3.2, why is that?

Great photos by the way, real realistic action, I'm a writer who is starting to take more photos and looking for the perfect set up. I have a Canon 60D and a Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-5.6 HSM OS Macro lens. I shoot indoors so looking for a good prime lens, or, two, thinking canon f/1.8 50mm and canon f/2.0 100mm . Do I need OS for prime lenses ?

Thanks for your help .

I have plenty of light in the arena where I shoot so I usually close it down slightly to f /3.2 for that little bit more depth of field. The photographers for the local newspaper are usually shooting at f /4 with their 1Dx's. If I am at a location where lighting is a problem, I will be shooting wide open.

If all you will be shooting is sports, your shutterspeeds should be enough where you don't need 0S or (IS). I usually keep the IS turned off when shooting sports at the shutterspeeds I am using. Now, if you plan on doing any other shooting in low light situations where you will need to use lower shutterspeeds, IS (OS) comes in handy.
