I am taking a 3 week trip to Germany, Austria and London in a few months. Trying to decide what I should bring with me. It is a family vacation so photography is not my only purpose but I will be taking a substantial number of pictures while I am there.

I need to be able to carry everything I bring so I am having to be more selective than normal.

I am thinking of bringing the 5D3, 24-70L 2.8, 17-40L and the Sony RX100 III. Seems like wide and fast will be the most important but I have never been so I wanted to get the thoughts of folks more experienced. There is a lonk to my gear list in my thread and I am not opposed to picking up something else.

Thanks in advance for the guidance!

Don't forget the EF 70-200 mm. f/2.8., a monopod and PLC filter.
Enjoy your trip!

Is there a reason I shouldn't? What would you bring instead?

Do it all the time...why not? Why else did you buy your expensive gear if not to shoot amazing places in Europe?

I'd skip the 17-40 and bring along a 35 1.4 if you have one. Great for street shots at night.

I'd take my 5D3 and probably just my 24-105L, because that kind of vacation is specifically where the IS equipped broad range zoom is most handy. I'd probably leave the UWA and the other body home and in your case just bring the 24-70.

There will be odd shot where wider than 24mm would be nice, but unless you are a super lover of UWA all the time, I bet you find you don't need wider than 24mm all that much. I travel to Europe a lot and I stopped taking my 16-35 because I just didn't need that wider end much.

To travel light, I would take (from your gear list) the 7D and 18-135IS-STM, which has a good reputation on this forum and in reviews. Since you don't have enough lenses , you might add the new 10-18STM-IS. But then I am a wide-freak. On my next trip, I plan to take at least my 15-85, 8mm Rokinon fisheye, and probably my 70-300L.

Canon 80D, 60D, Canon 10-22EFs, 15-85EFS IS, Sigma 100-400, Sigma 135/1.8ART, Sigma 30mm f/1.4DC, Canon 60mm EFs Macro, Rokinon 8mm fisheye, 550EX flash, Olympus TG6 underwater P&S
Postprocessing: DxOLabs 5, DxO Viewpoint 3, Paint Shop Pro 2021
Speak softly and carry a big zoom.

I just spent a week in Mexico and only brought a Canon G12. No regrets and am quite satisfied with the images. My friends brought a 5DII and a couple lenses and I think they left it in their cabana most of the trip. It's a vacation so I did not want to lug gear around when I was there to relax.

Up to the individual.

If you are travelling to shoot amazing places in Europe, take the FF. If you are travelling to work with your expensive gear, also take the FF. If you are on a family vacation, take the Rebel.

I usually travel with a 14mm 2.8, 24-70 2.8 ii, and a 70-200 4 (non is), and my 50 1.4. This leaves me with endless possibilities, and a large zoom range with hq glass. Sure, I'll have to carry a backpack all the time with all my gear, but I think the results are worth it. I mean, if you're already shelled out this much for the gear, why not carry it with you when you're experiencing something new and exciting? For me, the fact that I have to carry it around is not a good enough excuse to leave it at home. If I do find a good enough excuse though, I just bring my g12, which I did in NYC when I only brought a 1d and 24-70 mki.

I've been on four European vacations, including London. For me, a wide angle lens is the way to go. You'll need it to fit in the tall churches, cathedrals and castles. I missed very few shots by not bringing a long lens.

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.
