for all of you using either the G7X or the G16, I'm looking at these and the sony rx100 series. I'm a canon user, so I'm inclined to go with canon, but the rx100 is very tempting. what made you guys pass on that and go with the g16 or g7x?

Broader focal length range;
Faster aperture over a broader focal length range;
Dedicated EC control;
Touch screen for AF point selection;
I'm brand agnostic, but with a lot of Canon DSLR history behind me I would tend to stick with Canon unless there was a good reason not to. For some people the absent viewfinder might be a compelling reason to avoid the G7X.

But now I've had my G7X a few weeks I can't say I'm too impressed. As a pocketable point and shoot I guess it is better than most, but I find the ergonomics and responsiveness tedious when compared to a DSLR and I tend to take the path of least resistance in using it rather than optimising the configuration for each shot. Size and weight aside I'd much prefer to be using a DSLR, not just for the IQ, but because it is much easier and faster to operate correctly.

RX100 m3 has a viewfinder but shorter focal length. That is really the only difference. Both uses the similar sensor.
The g7x has a longer focal length then the rx100m3 and a faster aperture then the rx100 m1/m2.

The RX100m2 also has a hotshoe which none of the others have.

so I ended up buying the rx100m2, used it for a week or so, then returned it. IQ seemed quite good for a small camera, but what I couldn't get past was the controls on the camera. I can't stand having to go through menus to find iso, shutter speed and aperture. I also found that the auto focus, while decently quick, was difficult to refine and was more like trying to paint small details with paint roller. I just couldn't do it.

I'm still not sure I want to carry the 6d around with me everywhere, but until I can find a smaller camera that allows me to have the controls set so I can adjust everything without having to hunt through menus and look at the back of the camera while doing it, I'm going to have to stick with my dslr.

Still trying to decide between the g7x and the rx100. The RX seems to be more available used than the g7x so pricing is pretty similar. Any huge difference in image quality or are they pretty much equal?

Once the holiday season is over and I'm back at a comfortable money buffer, zone I will be buying the G7X over the RX100m2.

I am going this route because the menu system is much easier and the f1.8-2.8 lens. I also thought about the RX100m3 but I found it very uncomfortable to use the VF and only a 24-70 where as the G7x is 24-100. I can't carry my 60D now that I have my work laptop, surface pro 3 tablet, GPS, chargers, cables, signature pad, notebook, planner, and other various items in my backpack travels. I have been in situtation where I ended up using my phone which is decent.

So after looking at everything, trying out the rx100m2 and returning it, I'm currently playing around with the Olympus em1 and the 12-40 f 2.8 lens. Not exactly what I was thinking when I started this thread but I'm enjoying it
