I wanted to buy the 70-200 mark 2 2.8 IS but could not justify the price for hobby use, so I just bought a refurbished 70-300 for $309. If it ends up having the poor IQ at 300 mm issue some report then no big financial setback. This was less than half price.

Of course if they had an instant 40% discount on a refurbished 70-200, I would have bought that. :)

I never used one on full-frame. The 55-250 II was better on my 500D. I sold it and bought a 100-400L. Much happier.

I bought one yesterday with the sale too. I have a rarely used 100-400mm that I plan on selling :(. I know this will be a downgrade, but I needed the money for the 6D I just bought. It will hopefully be good enough for the rare occasions I need it.

The 70-300 is a decent lens, but come on, at least get a 70-200 F4 to go with your 1DX. This is like having a Ferrari and going to Al's discount tires to look for the cheapest deal you can find.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I used to own the 70-300. It is a pretty good lens but it is an older lens. The 55-250 stm is a brand new lens from Canon and is, I would suspect, much better.

If I had a 1Dx, I would trade it for a 5D3 plus a 100-400L II :)

I would think most folks who have used both would disagree, completely. I had the 70-300 and the 55-250 II. The 55-250 two is better at all common focal lengths. It is a lot better at 250 than the 70-300 is at 300. And the 55-250 STM is supposedly better than the II.

The 70-300 IS, along with the 50mm f/1.8, are the two least favorite lenses I have ever owned. The 70-300 was soft at 300mm and the AF performance was mediocre. If I needed a full frame compatible 70-300 in that price range today I would get the Tamron instead.

LOL, I hear you all....I bought the 1DX for a 50th birthday present to myself. It's more camera than I need, but its great fun. Yes I can easily afford the L lens but I also have three boys going to college, and one wants a new Macbook Pro.

I just could not resist the PRICE! I spend more on Gasoline each month :).

I have a sweet (first version) 28 to 70 2.8 L also.

I used my 10D for 10 years: it's still in perfect condition (as is my 1976 AE-1 ) and wanted to get back to Full Frame. The 5D was tempting, especially the mark 2, but oh well the 1Dx was only 7 grand.....spent more than that on three sets of braces - each set was more.

I'll put the 70-300 through the paces and let you know....

Mike

oh, and I also resisted getting a new iMac Retina Display, that thing is sweet...

I've got this lens, I bought it for quite a bit more then you paid years ago for on my XTi. I just used it for my grand daughters soccer games and it did very well. I ran it on 60d and it did very well, haven't used it on my FF. I also use it for the grand kids outside, not a problem at all.

For the price, I doubt you will be disappointed. You got a great deal on it!

Got it today....no extra for shipping, took just three days....it's pretty nice. Took a handful of photos and have to say it's not bad!

I took some outside, bright sun and snow, but not bad at 300 mm.

In doors the camera picked a faster shutter speed than I would have guessed when I shot at 300 mm so it picked an ISO of 5000 with shutter speed of 1/250 at f5.6. Perhaps the 1Dx says Hey You Need 1/250 with that zoom LOL....

So far, happy with it.

Your gear list says D10. Did you mean 10D?
