the price chart is off the Lexar 32gb 1066x on amazon now is $87

Memory cards seem especially susceptible to sudden price changes. It's probably a full-time job keeping just that one table up-to-date.

I can confirm that I got at least 40 full sized RAW before the buffer hit. It then went into 2 in a row with a pause and repeated that. FPS dropped to about 6 once the 2 in a row started.

Also for those with a 100-400L fps is at least 9 with single point plus surround with IS on. With 65 point , IS and iTR it drops down to 7 to 8.

16MB! That's huge. I have a couple of 8MB cards - but CyberDyneSystems can beat us both.

I found a 64mb card in my junk drawer the other day

Then you beat me to it. I'm looking at a 128 MB CF card right now. But I have a 16 MB SD card here too.

Hey, I have 512MB and 2 GB cards. I can make any of you a great deal on them.

Here's a selection of cards that, over the years, have been demoted from the camera bag to the bottom of a draw...

If you are photographing out of town somewhere and experience a CF card failure and quickly need to buy a replacement, you will probably have some trouble finding one. Similarly with a CF card reader.

So CF is not dead yet, but close.

This reminds me of a physics professor who always brought a slide rule (yes, I'm that old) in case the batteries in his calculator died. Hey, brainiac! Bring a spare battery.

I don't leave my house without a couple of spare cards in the bag. I use SD because I have to, 6D & 60D, but I do prefer them over CF, because they are smaller, and have no pins. But the fastest CF-based camera I've ever owned is a 3 fps 5Dc.

I've have a Sandisk firewire 800 reader and broke a pin in it. First time that has ever happened to me. The local Mac store luckily repaired it but you just can't find new ones anymore. Everything is USB 3 but my Mac is 2. I did come across some used ones on eBay but any suggestions for future proofing would be helpful. The tech changes everyday and I can't keep up to it.

Thanks in advance.

USB3 is both forward and backwards compatible. So you can use a USB3 reader in a machine with a USB2 port, it'll just run at USB2 speeds. Ditto a USB2 card reader in a USB3 machine.

I'm not sure if I checked into that. I may have. This happened a few years ago. Either I didn't know that or I did not want the slower speeds. However these days are not as busy so it is not such a big deal. If my firewire dies I'll pull the USB 2 out and if I come across a reasonably priced used firewire I'll pick it up.

Thanks. Since readers were listed on that link I did not want to start another thread. I actually did post that link on another 7D2 thread about a week ago.

I was wondering about my cards and then realized I had two 16 gig, UDMA 7, 800x Lexar's which I purchased in 2013 as a backs up when on vacation which have been sitting in my bag since. I have used Sandisk since day one.

When on vacation I bought some cheap Lexar's at Walmart because I thought I might run out. Intended for stills but when I got into some birding I quickly grabbed a card not to miss the action and put in the cheap card by mistake. It froze while buffering. When I got home I was able to recover most of the files. That card and the other cheapies wound up in the trash bin.

After that birding incident I went to Henry's in St. John Newfoundland and they talked me into the Lexar's because those were the fastest they had. I did not feel comfortable about Lexar which of course was totally my fault I so I never used them since the vacation. I have been using them for the last two weeks and they seem to be doing just fine. I think I read something about Canon and Lexar compatibly somewhere down that road.

So even though I preach this - "you get what you pay for" I had a cheap moment. Lesson learned.

I remember when all we had were slide rules. I always used a round one but it was a very personal decision with Canon/Nikon type discussions about round/straight. No POTN type place for the discussion.

I remember a CF card for my Rebel XT (350D) that was a small hard drive. They were cheaper but slower than the standard cards but speed was not much of an issue with the XT. It served me well.

The phrase "you get what you pay for" is a cop-out and usually wrong, especially with memory cards.

Shop around, look for sales, keep the merchants on their toes. Read reviews and avoid high-priced junk.

It is 400 years since John Napier invented logarithms, ultimately leading to the slide rule.* An excellent history from the early 1900's in Word or PDF can be found at*http://www.sliderules.info/pdf/pdf.htm (external link). Some other links exist but won't get you the book because the link seems invalid.

Thanks, I downloaded the PDF. It won't be long before we will be able to click on the "like" button for a helpful post rather than continue to clutter the original thread. I guess we need a "branch" button to take a conversation on a tangent. Other than the historical computing significance of the slide rule I can't image folks care about it all that much anymore. With phones and apps I don't know how many students even carry calculators anymore.

My cell phone is used to make phone calls. Are you saying it is possible to work with matrices, diffEq, or third-order equations on a cell phone? I truly am a dinosaur.
