pretty much what I expected. one good thing about this lens is the 4-stop IS should put a lid on the "bad copy" mumbo jumbo that plagued version I.

Not much of a Review.

Since the Zooming method is a significant change, I'd hoped he would have, at least, described it's functionality, rather than simply stating "it's more user friendly.

Can it be fully zoomed in a single motion?---- If not, it's less user friendly.

is a pro.

Like the "L" on Canon lenses, this term, by itself, means nothing. Well, except we can infer that he makes some (most or all, maybe) of his money from his photography.

I respect the guy, his opinions, his skills, his craft, his experience and his photographs (I have visited his blog many times). The fact that he earns money from his work? Utterly irrelevant, to me.

Having said all that, I am very disappointed in the "review". He praises the autofocus speed, but seems curiously evasive about the image quality as I noted in the main 100-400 II thread. Once you trim away all the direct quotes from Canon, there really is not much left except a photo of a very happy photographer holding the new lens!

Looking forward to it. :)

I have a pre-order with Adorama as well. Just found out that you can order direct from the Canon site for $2099 with overnight shipping, but there is going to be sales tax added on to that. Interesting that Adorama says that it will ship in the first week of Dec, whereas Canon says Dec 29th. Of course, Adorama also said they would be shipping the Sigma 150-600 Sport in October ("first week of October") one of the reps told me, so ....

Looking forward to reading your impressions on the lens when it arrives. I am in the process of selling my 100-400L, but have not pre-ordered the new version. I do not really need a longer telephoto until the spring, so I can afford to wait awhile and accumulate some funds towards the purchase. My 70-200 f/4 IS will do in a pinch until then.

has there been a bad canon lens in recent years? If the focal lens and price work for you, buy it. Cant recall a single lens made by canon that didnt perform very well since like 2010 or so.

Edrader- Andy Rouse is posting some very positive comments on his 100-400 Mk2 on facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/andyrousephoto (external link)
In his own words he is a bit of a Marmite character (you either love him or hate him!) however he is one of Europe's top wildlife photographers and I have found his insights into gear to be accurate so far.
I haven't bumped into him, at my usual haunts, for a while but I would like to quiz him on this lens. From his comments it would appear to be a dramatic improvement on the Mk1 IQ wise. I don't know about the IS improvements as I rarely, if ever, use IS these days as it slows AF and gives me one more switch to worry about.
Anyway it's looking like you will be very happy when yours arrives.

Wow, those are some great first-impressions comments. It is going to be an incredible lens. I am so incredibly tempted to place my pre-order. :)

I Chris Dodds is the real deal. He's a pro at BIF. I saw this a few days back and dismissed as I didn't even see subjective comparisons of image quality to prior model. Better detailed reviews will show up soon

Wait a while, I don't know what it is like in your neck of the woods but over here prices drop within a couple of months with new cameras and about 6 months with new lenses. Additionally let others work out the bugs! Any new product may have unforeseen issues that have not come to light in the Beta testing so just be patient and wait for prices to settle and updates to be incorporated.
Having said that the new 100-400 is shaping up to be a very nice lens! Personally I have no use for the zoom function or IS but I do like the improved IQ (over the Mk1) and the 98cm minimum focus distance - just the job for larger insects and small reptiles!
