For what $250-$300 you'll pay in repair I'd personally consider upgrading :)

I'd get a used 60D, or if you can afford it, a used 70D.

I really enjoyed my 60D when I had it. Constructed well and works like a charm. If you can afford it, I would try to get a refurbished 70D from Canon. It's like if the 7D & 60D had an awesome child with a new sensor.

Or get a used 7D - that will also be a great upgrade.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

The big advantage of going to a 7D as your upgrade, you can at least keep all of your CF cards, and the control interface is pretty much the same as on your 50D. The XXXD/Rebel style controls I like fine. The up to 50D/XD controls I really like. The controls on the 60/70D and 6D a find to be really difficult to use whenever I have tried them out in a store.

That would be a waste of money though. One should never turn in a DSLR for an exchange for a 10-20% discount on refurbished products. That is a very poor financial decision. You can do better than that deal by at least $100-200.

This wasn't a Loyalty Program price. It was a 20% off to anyone as I recall - no exchange needed.

it's a broken DSLR, I don't know anyone who will give you $100-200 for a broken 50D... for $50 more you can get a working one.

Just be aware that the move from the 50D to the 60D is a downgrade in one area: the 60D doesn't have microfocus adjustment.

I would never give that up in a future camera. But maybe it doesn't matter to you.

The 70D does have MFA...

just a thought before you jump on the upgrade bandwagon, is the shutter really broken or does it just not fire?

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
