With the upcoming release of the new 100-400 what do you think will happen to the used value of the old lens?

The new lens is selling for a much higher price so I'm thinking it's possible that once the old lens stock dries up the used value might actually increase over the current used price.

Every man and his dog is selling up at the moment so the used price is dirt cheap.

Reason I ask is I want to replace mine with either the Sigma 150-600, 100-400 ii or a 500 f/4 IS prime (ver. i).

What's the smart play here?

Heya,

It will probably not drop much. $900 maybe? It's still a working serviceable lens. Not everyone is going to toss their $1k lens for a $2k lens that is very very similar. Only those after that extra 1%, who cannot afford F2.8 glass, or are using it for hand-holding purposes and want a zoom and are unwilling to go DO prime.

I think you'll see the 400L MKI hold value for a long time.

I think you'll find some will prefer MKI to the MKII. Just give it time and watch.

Very best,

I want to sell mine ... but i will wait few month after the new mk2 "upgrade" effect, just "after" that most of the mk1's owners have sold theirs own before to "upgrade" like that i'm almost sure that i will not fall in a middle of a "competition" price

The new lens isnt priced so high in comparison to the existing lens that it creates any sort of boost in the prices of used copies of the original. I think you'll see downward pressure on the used market as the upgraded lens begins to hit the street. The original is almost the equivalent of a kit lens for the bird and wildlife crowd and given the age of the design users have been clamoring for an upgrade for years. Lots of users will upgrade asap and flood the market with uses copies.

Release of the 100-400L II did absolutely nothing to the value of my 100-400L. It's not for sale. Kinda like the whole housing crunch a few years ago. I lost about $200,000 on paper. You only take a loss if you sell.

it's definitely dropping...look at the classifieds here...there's a bunch of them hitting the market, and priced at $950 or higher aren't even getting any hits...i think it'll drop below $900...especially with it available refurbished right now for $1055 with a 1 year warranty...if anyone wants to sell their used copy, they're going to have to drop the price to make it worth it

Agreed. When I shop lenses, I go first to Canon refurbished to check availability and pricing. That 12-month warranty means a lot to me. If I can find used for 20% below refurbished prices, I'll buy. If not, why take the chance?

You KNOW there will be some people who prefer the push/pull over twist.

Correct. On both counts. I prefer the 100-400L I already own to spending $2,300+ ($1,400 net) for a bit of improvement at 400mm. I'll raise the ante on the 24-70 range. My Tamron 28-75 is excellent at f/4. I would like f/2.8 and IS (VC), but not enough to spend over $1,000 to get it.

Very best,

I'll go first. I can go from 100 -> 400 -> 100 without getting my left hand/arm out of shooting position. I honestly believe it is faster, too. But, I am also 6' tall with long monkey arms. I can see the zoomed-out length being a factor for a lot of people on the old lens.

I've got it up for sale now on a few local sites here in Aus. I'm now the proud owner of a 500 f/4. I think I will get around AU$1300 for it, I only paid $1500 for it brand new so not too bad.

Very best,

and many more who claim they don't.

if a guy gets hung up on the mechanics of a lens instead of what really matters he needs to get off the internet and get out there and shoot, imo.
