Canon G3

Hi, I have a G3, and love it! But I heard that the G lines were being discontinued, so I wanted to buy some accessories for my camera before they become hard to get. I wanted to buy a teleconverter so I can put some filters on the lens, what size do I need 52mm or 58mm, are there any other access that you recommend. Thanks

You need a lens adapter in order to use the teleconverter, filters or wide angle converter.

Canon has a 58mm standard bayonet. I believe the same lens adapter works for both the G3 & G5. The canon lenses fit 58mm. Third party 58mm adapters that work with any 58mm threaded element can be had on bay for $15 or so.

There is probably a 52mm or even 49mm adapter for the g3, but you probably won't find many lenses to work with these sizes. Filters will, but stacking them might cause vignetting...

I am pretty sure that you can find all kinds of elements for the g3 still and will for a good while. Even canon (according to the service people I spoke with) keep parts for 7 years after life, so you have a few more years of official canon support.

I'm getting my G3 converted this week. I've been using the G1 (unmodded) with great results but slow shutters (see my galleries in link below).

Try this site for good accessories for your G. They have wide angle and tele converters from different mfgs., and show shots from the different lenses so you can see the effects of distortion, vignetting, etc.http://lensmateonline.​com/

I just got a mint 2nd-hand WC-DC58N from KEH Camera Brokers, for a mere $95 USD. Works superbly, I might add. I think they still had one or two the last time I checked.

For filters, I think the most useful is a polarizer. It's very useful in reducing glare on water, windows, and even foliage--it can also deepen the blue in sky nicely. You can use either a linear or circular polarizer with any G, but it seems easier to find high quality (multi-coated) circular ones. The G has a very nice lens, so it's worth investing a bit in multi-coating on any filter you add to it.
Some folks suggest a UV filter to protect the lens (they typically leave the lens tube adapter mounted all the time), others suggest that you're more likely to get lens flare, and to just be careful with your camera. My understanding is that the UV filter doesn't help your images substantially unless you're at high altitude.
Most of the other filters affect the light in ways that can be recreated in a photo editor.

My impression is that the B&W and Hoya brands are both quite good.
