Thrift stores, Antique malls and retro clothing stores. I regularly visit all 3 of these in search for vintage camera gear and I see all kinds of stuff that would fit that description and usually pretty cheap.

For "one time use" items you might want to strike a "rental" relationship with some of the sellers at your local antique mart. I have done this in the past and I will leave a deposit of 100% of the sales price, use the items for a shoot, and then return the items for a refund of 80% of the sales price - in other words, the seller gets 20% for loaning me the items. Everthing is spelled out in a rental agreement including the duration of use, and exactly how much 20% is. Some are cool to the idea (so don't give up if one person says "no"), but others see the 20% premium on thier merchandise and are happy to work with me.

We have a "antique" store that is very happy to rent out items to photographers and movie people. We have rented several chairs from him to use in boudoir shoots. He requires a check for 100%, gives you 10 days to return it, at which point he returns all but $10 for most items. He has a real nice couch that we are renting for $35 for 10 days, its marked to sell at $999.
