Hey all,

I'm thinking of buying an old 1D2 for some of my swamp stomping. They go for good prices where I don't care if it gets busted.

But, I have a question before I get there. And that is the batteries. I'm fine with 3rd party batteries, Wasabi and me are friends. I only will have 2 batteries max anyways, so I'm not too worried there. But my big concern is the charger. A lot of these sell with everything except the charger. When I look up a separate charger, they're crazy expensive.

Does anyone know of a 3rd party charger for these batteries (NP-E3)? I've searched and I've found 3rd party ones for the 1D3 and later, but not the older 1D & 1D2.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Some of the chargers are almost as much as the camera used!

Very best,

Wow, I just had a go at finding a 3rd party one, and came up with nothing. The only place I found a Canon one, they were asking nearly $400.00, which is a damn site more than I could get for the 1D MkII if I sold it.
Sorry I have no way to help. Just amazed at the situation. I would have expected at least some of the dozens of 3rd party companies to fill this niche.

The biggest problem with the aftermarket 1d/1d2 batteries is that the end caps suck and they don't seal properly. Most everyone said the end caps for genuine canon ones off defective batteries.

not sure I'd be keen on something that fast-charges though, 90 minutes seems hell'va quick for nicads...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I saw that one too, read more closely. Out of stock, and no clue if they will get it again. It's possibly a ghost listing.

I just picked up a 1D2n from Adorama and it said it'll come with the battery and charger. If you haven't bought the camera yet, you may want to check with them. They had one for $299 and another in better condition for I believe $369. Also KEH had some in different conditions and all with batteries and chargers. I also checked B&H but they were kinda high compared to the other stores. I know I saw a few on ebay without chargers.

Heya,

Yea, I've looked around KEH and others. They have them with chargers, but you're literally paying half the cost towards just the charger which is nuts since it's not something that will deal with modern batteries on newer 1D series. So it seems odd to me for it to have such a value, while the camera itself doesn't even hold that value. I'm just confused I guess.

I'm in no rush, so I'm just shopping at this point. I guess I'll hold out for a simple deal on the bay or something that includes a charger, unless something crops up on KEH for a better price.

Very best,

If you are willing to rig up connectors then this one may be an option:

http://www.hobbyking.com …Discharger_1_6_Cells.html (external link)

This type of charger allows a wide range of charging rates for a wide variety of battery voltages. It will also charge Lithuium polymer, lithium Ion, Lead Acid cells as well as NiCad and Nimh. Note it can also use your car battery as a power supply (with a suitable lead).
I use an earlier version for charging RC aircraft batteries of various types as well as a 12volt Lead Acid car battery which is mt field power supply.

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Thanks!

Yet another option to consider.

I'm still shopping for a 1D2 with an original charger, so these will be my back up plans if I find a deal I cannot pass up without a charger.

Thanks again all. Amazing it's so difficult to get a charger for this camera.

connectors are probably the main source of issue with 3rd party chargers - I haven't seen anything at all that resembles the Canon plug for 1D batteries. Possibly you could use a broken 1D battery housing as a base for the charger, but it would need a bit of cobbling...

if it helps any, I could take a multimeter to mine & try and work out what pin voltages are (there are only 3 pins)

Was looking at a local deal on a 1D2 until I did some research and found the same with the charger. It's like you are buying a charger and get a free camera to go with it... I just decided something that obsolete wasn't worth dropping even a few hundred bucks on.
