Same thing happened to me, I grabbed a 50/1.8 as an interim measure, but then I don't use this length much.

Canon were charging something like 40% the value of the lens, so I didn't fancy that as it could break again anytime.

The 24-105 is a great lens but the bokeh is poor compared to a prime for focal plane isolation shots.

Ideally I wild like to see the same optics with a proper ring USM.

What led in part to my interest in the 50mm f/1.2L was that my 50mm f/1.4 had gotten broken, like the OP. But I also did not like the way the 50mm f/1.4 rendered. It seemed rather flat, lacking in contrast. At the time, this was with a full-frame 1Ds Mark II camera.

Once I received and starting using the 50mm f/1.2L, the difference between it and the 50mm f/1.4 was just astounding. What a beautiful prime lens!

Here is a foto on the 2nd day of winter here in California, something I call "Spring's Promise to Return."

Originally I would have said just get the f1.4 fixed.

I haven't used the 1.2 but these shots are gorgeous! I know what is on my wishlist for this year.. :)
