having to use both systems every day, metric does trump imperial.

every number logically flows into the next one.

we also use mph for speed....

and distances to roadwords in "yards".

but for ALL engineering it is metric through and through....

We don't use metric on any of our stuff.

I have to agree it is very nice looking slicer. :)

Why thank you, Omar. It's old though. But still works very well.

xpfloyd wrote in post #17337997 (external link)
I genuinely have never seen a cheese slicer in my life. We use a knife :-)

A knife? That would give you slices that are way too thick and differently shaped slices and it would be a mess. You want nice, thin slices. There's a reason we all use a slicer here, you know. :p

Amazing there are people in this world who have never seen a cheese slicer...

I grew up with cheese slicers like that. My dad would have a fit if I used a regular knife.

That's the problem, it's logical. The boys and girls in the House and Senate can't deal with logical systems and that's precisely the reason it will never be adopted in the USA.

:) in the UK weight is described in stones and pounds together so people would say they were 10 stone 10 if they weighed 150lbs. We wouldn't use kilos even though we use the metric system. There's some oddities like that where we don't use metric but instead use imperial measurements. When drinking we use pints. When talking about door measurements in the house we use inches. When talking about timber/lumber we use inches. When talking about height we use feet and inches. Everything else, I think, is metric. Confused!?

Sounds about right! Helps clear up the pounds vs kilo. I guess when we are speaking about weight we are doing so when speaking about bikes. However, i did have a lad reference stones while tugging at his stomach. So stones only for an individuals weight? Kilos for everything else? Except when mentioning body weight and needing lbs to finish the total Stones? oy LOL!

Lol yep. If it's an individual it's stones and pounds. If it's anything else it's grams and kilos and if heavier tonnes (not tons which is imperial). 1000kg is one tonne

Edit - except for sugar (in your tea). That's still in pounds I.e a pound bag of sugar :-)

Edit 2 - and narcotics - also imperial

1000kg = 1 Tonne (metric) = 0.984 UK Ton = 1.102 US Ton

well not really... because in commodities, we use litres, you use gallons...

but then a US gallon is different from a UK gallon, and the barrel sizes are different....

I am looking for pumps to shift about 700,000 gpm of seawater :) your work is not done yet, farlet!

I've just finished dealing with dewatering issues on one of my construction jobs. No more talk of pumps (for me). :p

Found a decent one, very inexpensive. Now you just need to find the right woman to wear them and you'll get the guys to move the water for you.

QUOTED IMAGE

Chet may be on to something here. Give the guys lots of buckets.

We use metric units in scientific contexts, even when science leaks into ordinary people's lives. Millimeters and centimeters are preferred at BugGuide, over inches and fractional inches, for stating measurements of insects. The dentist will tell you in mm how deep your periodontal pockets are. Results of blood tests (cholesterol, etc.) are printed out in metric units.

Fresh produce is priced per pound if it isn't priced "per each," but labels on food cans, boxes, bottles, and bags also give the metric weight or measure of the contents. Nutritional labeling is metric only (grams of X nutrient per serving). Time magazine has started giving metric units in parentheses after the imperial units.

I would love to see the imperial units go away and switch completely to the metric system.

One thing that has become ingrained so well that nobody thinks of it...wine and spirits both come in 750ml and 1.5L sizes, not in fifths and quarts and gallons of the past!
