I'm so annoyed... every time I go to Best Buy to try this camera out in person it's the one camera in the store that isn't functioning vmad

The one thing I wish this camera had from holding it was a dedicated EV comp dial. How does the EV comp work on this camera? Is it a quick one button press thing to change?

Here's a thing that puzzles me. I bought an A7Rii a few days ago. With all the upsides and downsides to it there's one particular thing that kind of annoys me. And it's the dedicated EV comp dial. I just can't understand why it's there, and I have zero user for it. And I haven't been able to understand why anyone would want one.

What's there to understand...? You're in the vast minority here, these dials are popping up on more and more new cameras because they're extremely useful.

When shooting in any mode with one or more variables controlled by the camera this dial allows you to make manual adjustments quickly and accurately. I use my a7S in "M" with auto ISO almost always and that dial makes quick adjustments for different lighting almost instant. Say my subject walks in front of a strong back-light, shift my thumb up and rotate that dial a few clicks clockwise and I'm good to go. IMO it's far faster than using AE-L lock, manual ISO setting or a two click system like my 6D had (where I had to hold down a button and then spin a dial).

And this is the thing that puzzles me. I shoot manual, and I'm just so accustomed to working with the triad of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Perhaps I should learn myself out of this habit. But so far it makes perfect sense for me, and EV comp has always been indifferent for me.

EV Comp doesn't do anything if you're controlling all variables manually anyway, so I don't see how it would get in your way since it has no bearing on your exposure anyway.

I shoot full manual if I'm doing studio work where I have complete control of the lighting, but out and about I rarely do. Letting the camera do the ISO allows me to instead focus on the much more important aspects of the image, DOF, shutter-speed and composition.

Of course it doesn't get in my way. But its redundant. And I'd like to have a use for the dial, but the customer button settings don't take the EV comp dial into account. I'd much rather have the dial dedicated for shutter speed control. The original dedicated shutter speed dial is too close to the EVF and I pretty much have to poke my other eye if I want to adjust shutter speed while keeping my eye to the EVF.

I'm just wondering why Sony decided to leave this dial dedicated when most of other buttons and dials are customisable.

It's likely because the dial has hard stops at either end... you wouldn't get full SS range if it were assigned to that function. I could see the argument for switching the places of the EV comp dial and SS dial for later cameras, though personally the placement of the aperture/shutter speed dial haven't been an issue for me.

Have you tried swapping the functions of the SS and aperture dials? Shutter-speed is probably the more frequently changed dial, perhaps it would be better suited to the front dial for you?

Awesome, good to know! Thanks! Still torn between the a6000 and a Fuji X-E2 though... I had the X-E1 and loved it and miss it, but the a6000 would definitely be more convenient since it uses the same lens mount as my a7S.

Just took the plunge and bought one with the kit lens, might get here Friday with luck. Really wanted something lighter and with video AF that I could drag around everywhere with my two toddlers. If I like it, will sell off all the Canon gear with maybe the exception of my 200 2.8 prime.

The work you guys have posted on this thread has sold me.

I've had the a6000 since April and I'm not sure if I've touched my canon since. The 35mm 1.8 is brilliant. High up on Boulder's flatirons this afternoon on a hazy day. Biggest selling point of the sony is that I 100% would not have brought my canon up on the rock with me

I have both, but not used the combination for any serious video - just quick stuff of grandchildren being grandchildren.

My other lenses are Sony 16-50, & 55-210, plus Helios 135mm f2.8 via M42 converter.

As a stills lens I like the Sigma 30mm f2.8 a lot, seems pretty sharp to my old eyes, and, while I'm not doing much photography at the moment, it's become the lens that spends most time on my A6000.

Was there something specific that you wanted to know about the Sigma/A6000 combination?

Rob

I have assigned the dial on my A6000 on the top right of the camera to AV compensation.
You can configure this camera pretty much as you want to. The problem is to remember what you have done.
So I put the EV compensation on the roller type of dial but you can put it elsewhere if you like.
You go menus, menu two (with a 'cogwheel' to the right of the 'camera') choose selection 6 dial/Wheel Ev comp and select 'Dial'.

Simple? No it isn't. Somebody at Sony whould get the boot for leaving the menus as difficult to navigate as they are in the A6000!
