If I had shot any wider, then it would have just been a photo of the park with a car in the way.

I thought this version was a good balance of highlighting the car and still showing its place within the surroundings.

it's not just any car. it's Navydoc's ride!! it is a nice shot regardless of my preference. really like it. makes me want to mount the 24-70 back on and play with it. havnt been doing so since the 55 and 35 are my favorite

Interesting. What are your thoughts about the FE 24-70mm, since you also have the 55 and 35? I keep thinking the 24-70mm would be a terrific general purpose lens to have (although it gets some terrible reviews by some like Photozone.de). However, Gene's photos display a fantastic lens rendering quality that really appeals to me. I like the look so much that I almost don't even care that it may not be crazy sharp at every focal length.

And I'm really torn about the 35mm. I loooove how tiny it is - what an awesomely light package it makes mounted to an a7 series camera! But, I kind of feel I would find more usability with the 24-70mm and am thinking about returning the 35mm to free up the funds to go ahead and get the 24-70mm. Really I am just very much liking all the FE glass and want them all.

+1 to that. What bothered me before was the distortion but it's quickly fixed with correction. so no biggy on that part. I remember using both d800e 24-70 2.8 and the a7r with 24-70 f4 and I ended up liking the sony set up better because of the zeiss lens

24-70 is a really nice range for a walkaround. I would however chose the 35 over the 24-70 because of lower aperture and it's sharpness, reason why I havn't been using the 24-70. But for the times I've used it, it was convenient. For needing wider and low light the 800e comes in play with 24-70 2.8.

for travel's and quick snap snots the FE 24-70 f4 works well. Most of my shots from my Alaska cruise was done with this lens because I was always on moving vehicles and did not have time to set up shots or have the time to put more thoughts into my shot.

If you have the time to foot zoom and put on some thoughts on your shots, I would definitely use the FE 35 2.8. And as you say, the size is really a treat. but to be honest, it doesn't make a huge difference having either the slim 35 or longer 24-70 mounted. the weight on the 24-70 is light. also lets not forget it is OSS.

then again you also have the 16-35. it's no wonder you are having hard time deciding lol. I'm not sure how much you are for wider aperture.. most of yours shots are in narrowed and only a few that are shallow with your 55's.

Sorry I think I'm going in circles. I haven't yet concluded what I want with my set ups as well lol. but hopefully some of my inputs can give you some thoughts.

I'm trying to decide on my sigma 35 1.4 for the Nikon. I really love that lens but I have been having a hard time getting it to focus correctly. focus peeking will help heeps but I have to consider getting an adapter.

Speaking of circles, I was going to go out this morning to do a little walk around with the camera set to jpg and black and white just for the fun of it. I took my 24-70 lens off and mounted the 55 f1.8. Then I got to thinking that unless I'm taking shots of people, I might be better off using my 35 f2.8. Hmmm, then I thought I should probably have to option to switch quickly and that I probably wouldn't need to shoot at a fast aperture and wound up putting the 24-70 back on!

I visited a friend of mine who owns a framing shop in the old (older) part of town this morning and happened to take this shot. I don't shoot 'street photography' but I thought this one looked OK. I like the color version better than the black and white in this case.

I liked the shot because it shows people both inside and outside...and yes, I could have opened up the shadows even more.

Looks great Gene. A CPL could be helpful in a a scene like this to kill the reflection of the white pickup truck in the glass. I like the strong reflections of the deep blue sky and red umbrellas. But, at 24mm the polarization effect is pretty narrow/limited, so I can imagine you could still kill the white truck reflection while leaving the other reflections intact. Just a thought.

It was nice for everyone to park their red cars next to the red umbrellas!

I am looking forward to adding this lens to my collection soon (need to sell a few items first though).

Have you experimented with how slow you can shoot and still get a sharp shot (handheld with OSS on)? I can go all the way to 1/4 on my 16-35mm @ 16mm, which is pretty cool.

Terrific looking shot Gene! How I wish it was warm enough to get out and take some pictures. It has been -20C here.

Thanks. It's 78° right now and I took advantage of our "winter" weather to visit the Palm Springs Air Museum this morning. I used both the Sony 24-70 and my Canon 17-40. Guess I need to get that Sony 16-35 some day.

Nice again! Gene, you are an excellent lens salesman (and an excellent photographer ). After a lot of vacillating I finally decided to send my 35mm f/2.8 back to Amazon today. I very may well buy it again, but I want to wait until all the native 35mm options become available (the Loxia 35mm f/2 and the upcoming 35mm f/1.4). But, for now, that frees me up to move ahead with ordering the 24-70mm. Very much looking forward having it as a companion to my 16-35mm.

I'm very flattered David but mine are amateur in comparison to your architectural photos that are well planned and composed, shot using a tripod and expertly processed whereas mine are usually, as in this case, a quick turn around and shoot hand held. I did have to wait for people to get out of the scene though.

One of the first aircraft I visited was "Miss Angela", one of the few remaining flyable B17's. The interior shots I took of the aircraft were done using my Canon 17-40.
