For me, the AF on the XT-1 with the 16-55 and 50-140 work well.
I don't shoot sports so that may be an issue. I did shoot sports with manual focus lenses 40 years ago. It does take special technique. In my view, one problem we have when moving from one camera system to another is expecting the new system to work with the same shooting techniques we used with the old. Every system has its own peculiarities that we need to understand and accommodate by fine tuning technique.

That said, if I was really into shooting wild life I'd want equipment with characteristics that were optimal for shooting wildlife. That probably isn't the XT-1 with current long zooms.

David, I am not even talking sports, wildlife. Even simple things like kids moving around are much harder with XT-1. I do like the smaller sizes, and fuji lenses but for some things dSLRs are still lot better. I really wish changing AF points was better implemented on XT-1.

Bobby,
I haven't even had too much shooting with kids moving around.
I have the AF point movement set on my XT-1 so that pressing any of the D ring buttons moves the AF point in the direction of the button.
Works for me. I know others use the buttons for different things for me moving the AF point and being able to adjust its size is most useful.

You have the full time d-pad focus selection enabled with 3.0 firmware?

7. Direct selection of AF area
The update will let users select the focus area using the 4-way controller, without pressing the Fn key.

[How to set]
Select the "FOCUS AREA" in the "SELECTOR BUTTON SETTIG" of the "BUTTON / DIAL SETTING" in the Setup Menu.

Just an update to what I had posted previously in the thread about poor image quality with the X-T1 and the 18-55, I finally figured out what's going on. It seemed to have something to do with the OIS system. Disabling the OIS gives much nicer results and just recently Fuji released an update to fixed this problem. It's a pretty enormous difference in image quality.

yes.

If you have full time D pad focus enabled, what do you find difficult about changing the focus point. Simply press the D pad, and the point moves. This simple feature has helped me a ton. The extra press with the camera up to my face was annoying before I enabled the full time feature.

I definitely won't argue with you about focus speed and tracking though. High performance helps but it simply can't compete with phase detection. Accuracy though, when locked, is great. That's the trade off with phase detection vs contrast.

Mushy D-pad buttons. I know later versions Fuji has made some improvements.

Regarding AF in AI servo mode, I am having better luck now. Finally configured the XT1 as:

Body FW: 3.00
Lens (55-200) FW: 1.11
Focus Area: 2nd to smallest
Macro: OFF
AF-C Release Setting: Focus seems to work better but do play with both Focus and Release
Instant AF:- AF-S
AF Mode: Area
Face Detection: OFF
Pre-AF: OFF but will try ON also
Shutter Type: MS <------- Had this set to MS + ES before
High Performance Mode: ON

MS+ES option doesn't let AI servo mode work. So don't use it.

I picked up a second hand X-E1 a month or so ago after shooting with a friends X-T1. Really liking the results it produces so far. Not on the same level as a 5D3 but it's more like it's just different, not worse or better. Yes the full frame camera is better in low light ( compared to the x-e1 ) and is 'crisper' but I like the Fuji so much it's made it's way into my working kit and soon to be joined by an X-T1 with 16-55mm F2.8. Two different tools, the 5D3 and Fuji, clients seam time with either.

On the X-E1 with an old CZJ 35mm @ 2.8

Fuji partial convert here and I'm experiencing many of the focus issues discussed. Most annoying is how 4 shots of a stationary object taken in burst mode can have different focus. Tack sharp, not in focus, and tack sharp again. I learned that I have to turned off OIS, how dumb is it that we have to do that--(even at twilight when we're already pushing it)? Never had that problem with 1D original, or Mark III. I've been shooting sports for three seasons now (recreational) and have some great captures, but more misses due to the slow focus issue. We're due a firmware upgrade this month and hopefully it will address what is already a phenomenal camera.

Regards,
Carl

I'm assuming the issue with having to turn the OIS off is when using the 18-55 OIS? If so, try updating the firmware for the lens. I had the same issue and Fuji finally fixed it in the latest lens firmware update.

This is good news. I think the Fuji XT-1 is an excellent camera, and I would have started saving up to buy one, but was deterred from pursuing that mode of action by reports of poor video quality.

One thing I really I liked about the XT-1 when I played with one in a camera store last summer was the solid metal body, and how it looked, felt, and functioned much like the old 35mm SLR's I cut my teeth on when I was just getting into photography back in the late 1970s.

Picked up an X-T1 with the XF 16-55 F2.8 WR OIS today, have yet to plug it in as it were. Going to run it alongside my 5D3 for a while to see how it gets on.
