Cape Buffalo at the River

I'm on my 16th trip to South Africa this summer (and 17th also). On my first trip I saw some lone 'dagga boys' Cape Buffalo bulls that were quite scary to encounter. On several later trips, lone bulls have presented a formidable front. That said, I grew up around farms in South Carolina with large herds of black Angus cattle. From this, for a time, each occasion that I cruise into a large herd of Cape Buffalo I felt it was like riding around in a pasture ... no worries.

And then I saw 4 lions take down a cow Cape Buffalo and the herd come in and toss the lions away like ragdolls, followed by forming a near semi-circle of protection. That was power I will never forget and since that time, I've learned to respect that they may be at peace, but they are always ready for war.
