This lens have a strange effect on me ... > mixed feelings !
I love it and i hate it (in the beginning) !
I use it a lot in the beginning underwater and barely on the land, nowadays it's the opposite, barely underwater and mostly on land.
It took me a while to know where this lens can be sharp ... the sharpness with a given aperture change when you change the focal length even at aperture like f/5.6 -f/7.1 some time it was more sharp at f/2.8 than at f/6.3... sounds strange isn't it ?

I work mostly wide open, at f/2.8 for example at 30mm the corner/midframe will be very soft and at 35mm for example it will be sharp enough and at 28mm very sharp.
So in the beginning i tried many combo Aperture/Focal length and i went a bit crazy with this inconsistency of sharpness, finally after some search on internet i found some graphics on DXOmark about this lens and it's differents sharpness/focal/aperture which help me a lot to find my marks.

It's a weather sealed lens, the focal range is absolutely nice (just perfect for me), i can do for example portraiture at 35mm, landscape and architecture at 16-24mm, street photo with a perfect range of 24 to 35mm, it.s a fast lens so very useful for everything.

Nowadays it's ok i learned what are the weakness of this lens, what are the strong point of this lens, so yes i like it (or i use to it), but for the price and what i expected in term of consistency sharpness (do not make me wrong it's a sharp lens) when i bought this lens + the learning curve to spot the best of this lens, i can not recommend this lens, because i'm sure there is third party lenses which can be better and less expensive.

I read many reviews like this before buying the new 16-35 f/4L IS version. Very pleased with it!

Here some shots:

Sharp @f/2.8 but look down at the corner, it become soft (i might asking too much, i know that and ok it's not a prime lens, but ... for this price ...)

This picture was taken in landscape orientation, i just cut the left and the right to make it a square (so not cropped at the top nor the bottom)

Here at 35mm @f/2.8 where, IMO, this lens is excellent.

Just curious , in todays digital world with access to high ISO speeds why do you shot most of the time at 2.8 ?

Many reasons, ... many ! and aperture f/2.8 it's not all about ISO ;)

But in your case (because you are speaking about ISO) just compare your pictures :
1 taken at ISO 400 and the same taken at ISO 3200 ;)

Nice review, I use this lens for a few shots on just about every shoot that I do. Weddings for example, I use it at 16mm on my 1DX (full frame) to get some great wide angle shots of the venue. Sports, I use it to get great outdoor and indoor shots of the venue. Clients love the shots. But yeah, it could be sharper in the corners.

I also hear this quite a bit myself. In regards to "asking too much" Dog, I believe you might be?
Forgive me lol, but, (coming from MF film) the only way you're gonna have an ultra-wide sharp in all 4 corners,
is to shoot MF film lol! I do protest a bit of being perhaps a bit .. too ... picky! (pun intended) :)

I bet you enlarge any one of those images ^ to 40x60, and they still look awesome!
Unless of course you're standing 2 feet away ...

I'm wondering why there isn't a "review" on the mk l series lens, (which I just purchased on eBay)
Everything I've read and seen between the 2, suggested I get the mk l.

It's my first "L", and I'm more than sure I'll love it ... Maybe I'll start a review mahself. :D

I have the mk version 1 as well and love it. Though I haven't had it link enough to review it yet. I would add some photos if you decided to.
