I did the switch, from T3i to Nex-6.

At first, there was a bit of adjustment, but I learned to use what I had to achieve my goals.

For me, the biggest thing was the ability to get similar quality photos in a camera package that is smaller then some of my old Canon _lenses_. Even if I had to sacrifice some features (AF speed and fast zooms; although AF speed has improved since I made the switch). The longer I use this setup, the more I find myself reaching for the smallest lens as opposed to the best IQ one. E.g. I have 18-105/4 which is a very good lens but about the size of a 17-50 for Canon, but I more often just use the 18-55 kit because it's so much smaller and the resulting difference in IQ is for most part negligible. I can fit my camera, a zoom lens (either 18-55 or 18-105), a 12mm lens (16/2.8+UWA adapter, still tiny even with adapter mounted), throw in a fast prime (50/1.8 usually), three spare batteries and a charger, and it all fits in a 11" x 11" 2-compartment messenger bag I used to carry my iPad around, with room to spare. So I have a 12-105 mm coverage, all in a bag I wouldn't be able to fit my T3i with 17-50 attached.

If you get into A7, even if you keep your Canon lenses, you can still get a FE lens(es) and convert from a large to a small setup with a simple lens change. Not possible with Canon bodies, even SL1 is too thick.

What I still miss are Canon colors - I find them to be the best for Caucasian skin, Sony raw files require more fiddling with WB to get pink skin colors. I used to miss the fast f2.8 zooms but I can live without them.

Ex-Canon shooter. Now Sony Nex.
Life Lessons: KISS. RTFM. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I rented the A7r and metabones 4 for my trip to Monument Valley. I ended up loving it especially for manual focus. However I dont like the thought of switching right now. 1. Sony and Cannon will be announcing something in 1st qtr. So really need to wait. In the mean time i picked up a 449 deal on the A6000 so that I can continue to learn the sony environment if i go that way.

my two cents

Do the A7 models let you use IS on canon lenses?

The A7 II, which was also mentioned in the OP, has in-body image stabilization, which I think is killer.

Pretty useless, IMO. However the focus peaking is much better, IMO, than Fuji and I use it all the time.

MF-ing at 1.2? How difficult? :P

Did you get the metabones or another one since you use MF?

I don't have any issues MF @ 1.2. I do zoom in to verify though, if you were to use focus peaking without zooming in, I imagine you could have issues until you got the hang of it.

I got the metabones for the electronics (I don't think you'll get zoom without it? something about distance information) and EXIF / IS functionality.. From what I understand there are cheaper adapters that do the same thing as the metabones on the market now though.

Not as hard as it sounds, with focus peaking. Once you get the technique down, you'll start to realize how terrible phase detect AF really is at focusing at large apertures, as you'll be able to refine the focus to a much more granular level than even a single AF point is able to. At f1.2, (1.3 with the metabones adapter), you can see the focus peaking system refine the focus down to a person's eyeballs. You also aren't contending with the calibration issues that DSLR's are plagued with (by design)...no more fussing with MFA and what-not.

Nice choice!! Nokton 35 is a great lens! A bit heavy, but worth it.

Let me know what you guys think of your a7R's after a few weeks of use. The sensor is great in good light, but I'm already ready to ditch the R for the S in the near future... I'm finding I can't get sharp results without using 2x my FL when shooting handheld which makes me have to ramp the ISO up and past 3200 they aren't the best files out there (still better than APSC, just not as good as my 6D was).

I've had mine for a year nearly. No issues here.

Can you get sharp shots using the 1:1 rule for shutter speed and focal length (for example; 100mm @1/100s)? This is the only issue I seem to be having with mine... with my 6D I could consistently get sharp shots shooting at my focal length equivalent or often even less in shutter speed, with the a7R though, I can rarely get a sharp shot using the 1:1 rule. I also have my issues with it's high ISO handling, but I knew that going into it ;)

Yes, I have no issues with it at all. I don' have issues with the high ISOs either. The results I find to be perfectly acceptable.
