I have just bought my 10D and went for the 70-200/2.8 with the 550 EX. I am aiming for the top - after moving from a Nikon based film system. I have read that the buzz on the 24-70 is that it is slightly less sharp than the now "discontinued" 28-70/2.8. for the difference in price i wish thet i could get my hands on the 28-70!Does anyone know of a site that has tested the 24-70/2.8 the way that photodo.com did with almost all important lenses of a while back !! How little is the difference between these two lenses please --- i want to buy my second kick-ass canon lens.

here's the reviews I read before I bought the 24-70 f2.8L.....

For the most part I agree with these reviews, this Lens is great on my film cameras but there are known issues with this lens and the 10D. Canon is aware of them, but hasn't thus far made an offical stament about it. I sent it to canon along with my 10D to see if they could get it to calibrate and focus well with the 10D. I just got it back today and haven't tested it yet. I'll let you know if it's function is improved. If you are shooting Digital with a camera that crops FOV then the 24-70 is your best bet. if you are lucky enough to be shooting a 1Ds or a film body the 28-70 would be fine.

I shoot a 1V w/ the 24-70/2.8 and I love it. No problems.

Could you elaborate and/or provide a link about the 10D issues?

www.charlottecamera.com (external link) had a couple of 28-70L's on their used site.

The issue of compatibility is brought up on several occasions on other boards. Gilbraith, DP preview et al. I am frankly far too lazy to track them down. I do however know one person whose 24-70L lens was "borrowed" by a canon tech so that they could demonstrate the problem to his superiors. My personal experience has been consistant with those findings. I don't fault the lens, it's awesome. It's the 10D that seems to be the weak link in this case.
