San Clemente Island

Very nice colour. Water clarity looks quite nice. Is that a Scorpionfish in # 4?

Visibility is usually pretty good at the off shore(as in not very close to the main land) dive sites, it wasn't as good as I thought it would be(still required some cloning in some shots) but as good as you can hope for. I've been on dives where I couldn't even get a usable shot unless all you wanted to show is how bad visibility was.

I have it named as Sculpins and I'm pretty sure I got the ID correct, it is part of the same family Scorpaena gutatta. IIRC the Scorpion from these waters that looks about the same is brown instead of red.

doesnt it scare you to have your gear underwater? i have thought about doing this, but the pucker factor is incredibly huge..

Not after doing it a few times, as long as you maintain your housings and ensure all o-rings are in place/clean and everything is properly locked in place worst case you should have is a leak. For a full on flood you'd need to do something wrong in which case you could still have insurance. I personally keep my housing on a lanyard so I can let go of the camera if both hands are needed for an emergency.

Thanks. The island(where these shot were taken) is a several hour boat ride from the city but I'm not sure can find all the same wildlife off the coast of the city as well, although there might be a kelp forest directly offshore of it.

Here's a shot from a friend's house in San Clemente with San Clemente Island to the south(near center of the frame) and Catalina Island to the north(right side of frame).

He is referring to SCI. SCI is an island off the coast. It is the largest of the Channel Islands. This is a great island to dive if you can. The USN controls this island. This is where SEAL candidates go for phase two and three after they make it through Hell Week at Coronado Island.
