Good day.

I'm trying to find a gear bag setup that would work well for hiking and wildlife photography. I would like to find a rain proof bag that I can stow a large bodied camera (Such as a 1D or 7D with grip) with a long telephoto lens such as a Sigma 150-500 with the hood attached.

Ideally one that can be slung down to the side, or carried more across the chest, and plays nicely with a normal backpack, and/or hip bag for a second camera.

All of he options I'm seeing so far look like they would be awkward to actually hike with while still maintaing easy access to bring the camera on target quickly. I don't really want a lens that long hung from a hip bag (as that would make hiking more awkward than a chest rig I find), and I don't want to have to take the time to remove the pack or sling something off my back.

Also it seems that most gear bags lack the space for lenses that long with the hood attached.

Any suggestions on an off the shelf solution to look at before I fall back on building something custom?

I'm not sure there is an answer to everything you want there without a custom solution, but here is one idea:

also, Gura Gear makes good backpacks (kiboko and bataflae) for long lenses, but you would have to set it down to get it out.

I use an f-stop Loka with a large pro insert, but I don't have that lens and I doubt it would fit with the hood in place. You could do the XL ICU, perhaps, but that takes up all the bag space, leaving no room outside the ICU for extras.

There are a bunch of long-lens cases out there. I don't know the size of the 150-200, but here is the long Kinesis bag (They have smaller, less expensive versions).
