I bought a D7100 near the end of summer in 2013 when I stumbled onto a deal that was too good to pass up. I hadn't intended to buy one but was curious about how well it could do shooting radio control events. The extra pixel count meant more artificial reach (I crop a lot of sky away) so I decided to take the deal which was the D7100 & 18-105 Kit Lens but IF you bought that day you could buy the 70-300 VR G for basically 1/2 price & I'd need it for my intended use. Now before it sounds like I'm bashing the Nikon I need to explain that I had been told by a couple of pro's I know it likely couldn't do what I wanted because I'm shooting with much more expensive Canon pro gear. From a cost standpoint the D7100 & 70-300 did great & once learned can be an excellent camera / lens combo. My needs are far from mainstream so these are to demonstrate what it can do, but my keeper rate was low vs what I'm used to. It's weak link is the shallow buffer but it has excellent IQ. These samples were shot 1 week after buying it, and after shooting that event I decided to try the 28-300 too (I shoot the Canon 28-300 L IS which is HEAVY so I had hoped the Nikon might be decent but frankly the 70-300 is sharper & a much better buy). Note too that both Nikon lenses are twist to zoom while my Canon 28-300 & 100-400 are push / pull & I think now that I've adjusted to them I can place my left hand much further out while working the zoom which seems a more stable way to hold the camera & lens. Technique differences have to be a part of my low keeper rate.
Remember, these are model aircraft, not full scale, and I'm allowed on the flight line at our events so panning gets more important as I'm relatively close to a very fast moving target but I need a slow enough shutter speed to get prop blur. These shutter speeds work for model aircraft but are way too fast for full scale). These were shot with the 70-300, I'll add a few that are shot with the 28-300 but they are of full scale aircraft in very dull light.

These are from the D7100 & 28-300 VR. They are full scale aircraft & I think the crowd is kept about 500 feet back from the runway so distances to the aircraft while performing are likely between 500 - 1000 feet. The light was terrible in the morning but improved as the day went by.

Very nice shots there folks, the d7100 is a very sweet camera not to dissimilar to my D90 in DR etc, the R/C shots are great some of these replica's are amazing especially the large scale big stuff - liked ducted fan bombers etc:lol:

All the best and seasons greetings.
