White dog in the snow

Was outside messing with my 100-400 while the dog was out and got this shot. Does the exposure between the dog and snow look ok? Just looking for ways to improve my winter snow shots

Looks quite good, to me. Very foreground snow highlights might be a tad bit high, but that's a complete nit to pick there.

I agree, it looks pretty good. No obvious color cast in the snow, it's natural looking (i.e., "snow colored" rather than gray), and the scene looks pretty well exposed.

I could never get my head wrapped around the "exposure compensation" thingy.
I starting shooting in live view-manual mode using the displayed histogram to expose to the right.
One must remember that the LV image is a jpeg representation of the image and you must neutralize your
in-camera picture styles for that histogram to be more accurate representation of the RAW image.

On my uncalibrated work monitor, it looks OK. Good focus, appropriate exposure, appropriate processing.

You're not losing detail in the brightest parts of the dog (white parts of the tail), so it doesn't matter if you clip just a tiny bit in the unimportant details on the snow.

I think you nailed the moment. definite distinction between the shades of white, and to echo above, the snow looks like snow. I think the bits of color from the leaves/twigs also helps add some depth to the image. the real trick will be what does this look like when it's nothing but that dog and fresh snow with nothing else!
