Hello everyone
I just bought the new 7dm2 and i am having a problem opening the cr2 files with windows 8.1 photo gallery for viewing any ideas on how to overcome this problem would be great. I have elements 11 and lightroom 5 but still like to look them over before i start to edit them.

Sorry, I cant help other than to make sure your version is up to date.

why dont you just save yourself the headache of figuring this out and open them in lightroom immediately? Its easy to purge if you dont like them.

This.

I imported almost all my images into Lr (deselecting any images that I can tell aren't any good when viewing the thumbnails), then go through and flag the ones that I don't want to keep. Then I tell Lr to remove rejected images.

May need a Windows convertor, usually comes with the software from the camera

I'm not certain windoss supports the 7D2 raw files yet but you can view them as part of the LR import process so its just as easy.

I installed all the software when i bought the camera. The older version that came with my 60d would open the cr2 files. I am use to downloading the files and then going though them quickly to weed out the bad ones.

The problem is that cr2 is not a single file format. Each new cameras cr2 file format is different, because of the new features in the camera. So your new 7DII cr2 files are different from your old 60D files and the software can't read them.

You need the latest update to Lightroom (5.7). That now includes support for 7DII files. Don't know when Microsoft will get around to updating their codexs to support 7DII.

IrfanView version 4.38 opens the 7D2 CR2 files no problem. It probably just accesses the embedded JPG, but if all you are doing is screening, it should suffice.

Part of the point of using LR, is it is also a file manager, which includes the ability to view RAW files, and more importantly, sort them and organize them before doing any post production.

True but not what he asked.

There are times when one takes like 400 pics rapid-fire and you know most are out of focus or subject missed or partly cut off, etc. Loading them all into LR on a laptop and then reviewing them can take VERY long. Prescreening with IrfanView or other simple viewer can speed the process.

Using LR properly would overcome issues with viewing RAW files prior to editing.

Performance issues LR are another problem, but if your going to use a slow outdated computer, RAW processing is going to be a slow and painful process.

Both computers are new the laptop is a i5 so they can handle the raw files no problem. Last night i used lightroom 5 to weed out the ones that i don't want and it was a long process. I think i will try irfanview and see if it speeds up the process until windows updates there codexs.

Once you have IrfanView you won't need Windows codecs.

My laptop is an i7 and is still very slow in LR. I mean, it's not bad for 10-20 pictures, but if you have a few hundred, it will take very long.

The Microsoft codec is pretty old (Sept 2013) so there will be quite a few unsupported cameras.

If you want to open files from your Canon 7D Mark II in any of the Adobe products you must have installed Adobe Camera Raw 8.7 where your camera has been added to the list of supported cameras.

In any other software supporting *.cr2 files, as it was mentioned previously, you must have a codec/library which supports your camera. It's always good to check if there are no any updates.

You can always use the DPP which you got with your camera. It surely support Canon 7D Mark II.
