I'm just wondering why there's a section for "food photography". Shouldn't that actually be a subset of subject matter under the broader subject of "Product Photography"? I know several product photographers that photograph food among other things such as electronics, spirits, clothing.

Shouldn't the forum be called "Product Photography" instead of "food"?

I think this makes sense and I agree

There are pros and cons. As categories, both food photography and product photography overlap considerably with still lifes. Many shots in the food thread that was moved into the forum aren't commercial shots at all. They're photos of someone's quick lunch or holiday dinner. Similarly for shots of nonedible objects now in B/W & Still Lifes that could go into a combined Food & Product forum. How would you select images to move?

Combining food and nonfood would create a better balance. The new Food forum is so pitifully underpopulated that I started a "Post your _____" thread there to get things going, although I had just one photo for it and not a very good one at that.

All this is just my opinion--or, rather, a subset of my opinions.

You got me... I don't have an answer to the question of "how would you select images to move".

I just was really confused by an entire forum area called "food photography", when there isn't a "product photography" area... yet there is also a "fashion, commercial, and editorial" forum area.

I just was hoping somebody would explain why "food" got all the votes over "product".

I don't know how the decision was made, sorry.

I recalled a post where a new Food Photography forum on POTN was mentioned as justification for creating a dedicated Real Estate/Architecture Forum. That's all I remember and I don't know where the Food Forum was placed.

There is a line in the sand somewhere where you stop creating forums for each kind of sub-topic. I just don't know where that is. Real Estate and Architectural seems like one forum, Food - Commercial or Otherwise seems like one forum. Landscapes/Cityscapes/Scenery seems like one forum, etc. But this is how I personally differentiate them, others have other ideas. This is what makes forum definition difficult.

I wish the main categories of photography forums would be a bit more logical. My feeling is that Food, Product, Still Life, and other types of non-human studio photography subjects should be gathered into a single forum with sub-forums for each type.

As one who is actually interested in all these studio genres, I would appreciate seeing them in one convenient same basic area.

From my understanding "Product Photography" was always in "Fashion, Editorial & Commercial" forum.
And "Food photography", specially the way it's described have nothing to do with "Product" nor "Commercial"
Just my thought ;)

So, would this photo that I took of my lunch (external link) qualify as food photography? Or . . . . would it fit better in the Astronomy & Celestial Forum?

We need a new forum (one that I will be hiding from my POTN view): Nausea Induction Photography. I am grateful you didn't post a selfie showing the other parts of the sandwich. ;)

Baby-bump photos (including hands making heart shapes), toddlers-with-food-on-their-face photos, and almost all new-gear-test-shot photos would be great for the Nausea Induction forum.

From my point of view, and i'm not sure, i think it will fit in the Archeology forum and more specifically in the "Ancient Aliens" sub forum, but your picture might also be in the "Wild Olives" sub forum where people are speaking about "Olives Invasion in Flying Saucer" ...

I'm torn between two threads: "Are you looking at me?" in Wildlife and "Post your body parts" in G&N.
