PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

I have found something out the other day that applies to using all A/F lenses in RAW or movie modes and is really helpful to those that use the longer lenses for wildlife /birding . the main problem I have found so far is actually keeping the target box on the birds/animal eye handheld ..
so in your top 1st camera menu you will find a digital teleconverter switch this to on ,then assign it to a button for easy on off .. when switched on it gives a 2x enlarged view in the EVF enabling easy views of the birds head/eye making life very easy indeed .. this also works in jpeg but I have not yet tested that ???
been playing with it for a few days now and went out today for a real time practice it worked better than expected . this will be a real godsend come the summer for long range insect/flower close up where the focus is critical . heres a couple from todays practice .. I was hoping it would improve b.i.f work to but its not as good as normal methods .so I would advise only using on slow or static targets

Interesting this Jeff - I have just tried using it - taking pictures of the TV screen - and see exactly what you mean. When I looked back at the picture on the rear LCD, it showed a white rectangle which I assume represents what I was seeing in the EVF but when I loaded it into Lightroom, I got the full image - not a sign of the digital teleconverter crop. All good but I wonder what the Digital Teleconverter function is meant to achieve.

Hmmm - more to ponder on, will definitely think about using this. I DO have a button programmed for the MAGNIFY function but as I did this months ago, will need to look at how close or different this is to the digital teleconverter function which you point out.

EDIT: Just discovered that JPG files ARE cropped to the centre of the sensor as expected. The RAW images come back with pixels from the entire sensor.

I like you tried the magnify function ,but couldn’t get on with it this works in a similar fashion but differently , the best way to describe it is a close focussing aid , I.e for birds in particular which tend to move a lot keeping the head/eye in focus box at distance ,hand held, and with long 400mm focal length is extremely difficult .after trying it out yesterday it really does work and well to with looking at the photos a around 98% hit rate on perched birds .. as I said it’s not as good with moving targets . On the 1-mkiii I have used the exp comp button for this function easy to, switch without taking your eye from the viewfinder as it’s right behind the shutter button

Not done much experimenting but the single potential drawback I can see when using the Digital Teleconverter thing is that you are restricted to focussing in a central area, roughly 25% the size of the full sensor - no good if you want to compose with your subject outside of this area - does this concur with what you have discovered?

Nevertheless, as you have pointed out and demonstrated with your test shots Jeff, a feature which is rarely discussed but very handy in the right circumstances - thank you for raising this here. :-)

Jeff I gather you are using this just as a tool to focus and not using the digitally enlarged photo produced, rather the raw file that is the full view version?
It sounds intriguing way, and a creative use of that feature

yep thats correct Richard and in answer to wyzman yes agreed but for me and other birders with the 100-400 lenses keeping a birds head/eye in the focus area handheld can at times be difficult to say the least . this does not enlarge the photo in any way in RAW its just a focussing aid but one that seems to really work . it will have limited use to other genres except maybe if taking portraits of people hand held ? perhaps used in conjunction with eye detect .
I also often in summer use the 100-400 for insect pseudo macro shots and I feel this would be of benefit there to i.e trying to get a feeding butterfly in focus at a distance hand held can often be difficult . with members of this small group spread around the globe it may well help someone somewhere

Thanks and will look at this in more detail

Sounds like a good feature that even if not used (ultimately) for its intended use has benefit in other areas. Brilliant

We've a warning on our East Coast to stay away, out of water!
One of the problems is the shelf of rocks people fish off.
At sea level, literally, and too many get washed out just by wave action. We lost a couple a Christmas. So sad.
These warnings really are aimed at those that think waves are waves, but these waves have power behind them even if low by the time it reaches us.

Jeff I just gave this a trial but it also enlarges the focus point (square) such that it covers the entire bird. (my little wrens)
Things further away it's still huge.
Is there a way to shrink that green box in this setting?
I couldn't find one

I use the smallest focus point rich .. suppose it depends on distance to target . Overall I have found it beneficial when hand holding it does nothing to the photo in RAW it’s just a focus aid
