Who here owns an RX1? I have one on the way to me for two weeks from borrow lenses. Im strongly considering buying one for a "take everywhere" camera.

The lens, sensor combo are made for each other.
It is expensive but it produces images that have that something special.
I love mine.
Enjoy it!

My guess is that there will never be an RX2. When the amazing RX1 was released my feeling (and hope) was that it was a proof-of-concept type camera; that it would ultimately morph into an ILCS FF system. That hope became a reality with the a7 series and now we already have an a7 II.

My greatest disappointment with a7 series, is that Sony failed to release it with a 35mm f/2 lens of the same quality of the lens in the RX1. I was so disappointed with the FE 35mm f/2.8 lens (being a full stop slower) that, to this day, I've been a bit allergic to the FE lens ecosystem. Hopefully the 2015-scheduled release of a FE 35mm f/1.4 lens will finally give the system a much needed fast 35mm.

I would not upgrade to a RX2 model if it became available.
Just love this camera as it is now but I do understand your concern
about the upgrade cycle, it's always lurking with all our equipment.
Another consideration is whether you want the RX-1 or RX-1r.
I have the -1r. Just trying to make it easier for you. :-D
Great sample thread at FM if you're interested:

Hey, thanks! I am going to be shooting mostly my families daily life with this camera. Absolute sharpness isnt critical. Do you see much moire or anyhing in clothes?

Believe me, either version will be plenty sharp across the frame.
Never have seen any moiré. The files are beautiful.

I haven't seen it on fabric, but I have seen it on a distant corrugated iron roof. It was just the one frame, but horrid. However, that's one more frame with moiré than I've seen with any of my Canon bodies. Note that I have the RX1, not the RX1r without the antialiasing filter. If you've hired the RX1r, expect artefacts.

Protip: make sure the close focus/distant focus setting is correct when you start a session. It's easy to forget that it's set to close focus. I once had an excellent shot ruined by that - in bright sunlight, you can't see the lack of AF confirmation.

If your rented camera comes with the hood, use it outdoors. It is needed.

Welcome to the club. I agree that it's an incredible take-everywhere camera. Mine has either been in my messenger (computer) bag or in my coat pocket since I got it last September.

Head over the the RX1 photo sharing thread once you've had a chance to take it for a test drive. It's been a bit lonely over there! :p

Well, Ive had the camera for about 4 days now. I like its size and LOVE the image quality but holy crow the focusing sucks. I dont mind that speed with which it moves from stop to stop but the semi low light inability to lock is very frustrating. Combine that with the fact that Im mostly shooting active children makes it even worse. I have it through Christmas time so Ill get more time to mess with it but as of right now, Im thinking its not going to work for me. That makes me sad. :(
