I never noticed this before I got my 4K monitor, when browsing through some shots from today in Fast Picture Viewer 64 I noticed the Raw versions were displaying smaller than the Jpeg versions? When I looked at the pixel dimensions I saw the Jpegs were showing 3888 x 2592 but the Raw File was only 1936 x 1288? (on a 1dmkIII). Double checked my camera settings and yes it was still set to RAW and L Jpeg, the camera was saying each should be 3888 x 2592? I then went back and had a look at some shots from my old 1dMKIIn and to my surprise there was the same phenomenon Larger pixel size on the Jpeg than the Raw (Jpeg=2771 x 1847, Raw=1728 x 1152) , although the 1dmkIIn is now gone I know I also had that set to Raw and L Jpeg. I then checked my 5dc and again; although it too is set to Raw and L Jpeg it also gives a smaller Raw size pixel dimension than the Jpeg (Jpeg = 4368 x 2912, Raw = 2496 x 1664) I have no idea why this is? I also have a 550d and a 650d and both of those are set to record Raw and L Jpeg and both report the same pixel size shots for the Jpeg and the Raw file 5184 x 3456? . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . Wait a minute It's all coming back to me now! The Raw file also creates a small jpg file as well doesn't it for ease of display when viewing on the lcd etc and it's the size of that file in pxls that is being reported, I guess the smaller cheaper cameras don't save a small Jpeg along with the RAW file and as such the RAW file displays as it's true size. I'd wrote all the stuff above out before I remembered about the integral Jpeg file contained within the Raw file so thought I'd leave it and post this, it might come in handy for people who's memories are worse than mine. It would be nice to know though if my supposition about the small jpeg file not getting recorded in the RAW file on the entry level Canons is correct.
