Just finished up another lengthy article... This time on "Color Profiling Your Camera" (external link) - or ensuring accurate and consistent color. I'd be happy to answer any questions!

IMAGE: http://lavidaleica.com/assets/articles/cpyc/Color_Profiling_Your_Camera.jpg

A necessity if you value color accuracy and being able to output them repeatably (say over different weather conditions, different days, cameras or output choice).

The technique applies equally to pretty much any camera, and is similar for other color/profile targets. In this case, I used a Fujifilm X-T1 and X-Rite ColorChecker Passport.

Enjoy - hope it helps! :)

Thanks!

I looked but didn't see any decent articles that really discussed this, at least clearly or in-depth. It's an easy process, and an important one... So I definitely hope it helps.

To the OP who was looking for a decent article that really discusses the topic, here is a video that covers much if this in detail:

i will definitely take some time to look over your article, thanks for sharing.

As a Capture One user (i use Adobe CS too), I don't have it so easy. There is a long process where one can take the results from the color checker software and apply them to Capture One, but from what I remember it was pretty technical and I never did it. If you're interested in another challenge, :D you might try looking into that issue. I know that there are a lot of folks out there who are looking for a solution.

You can profile your camera for ICC profiles in CaptureOne by using RawDigger and Make Input ICC, a wrapper for the useful components of ArgyllCMS.

Raw Digger:

http://www.rawdigger.com (external link)

> you will need the Profiling Edition, which is not free ($89) but saves you the hassle of trying to extract a CGATS file by hand or within the command line interface of Argyll.

Make Input ICC:

detailed here: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/51765762 (external link)

and includes workflow suggestions.

> uses the color data extracted from Raw Digger to make the ICC profile for use in CaptureOne and elsewhere. It is free.

Once you make your ICC profile, put it in the path where your system-wide profiles reside and select it from the "Other" menu item in the ICC Profile menu in the Base Characteristics tool.

May be worth a shot if the C1 profiles are not getting it done for you. If you are on a Mac, Raw Photo Processor has camera profiling built in (if you donate to the developer - I gave $30 - you get an unlock code to enable this functionality). Like the above workflow, you can provide arbitrary target data so that you can use other color targets (QP Card, etc.) in this profiling workflow. RPP is also an exceptionally good raw converter as well.

Plus a $10 mail-in rebate = $49!
Thanks for the tip! Got about 7 hours left on the deal.

Amazon also has the same deal right now, no time limit.

EDIT: Looks like the Amazon deal is over(must have been a time limit), back up to $99, still a rebate though for $10.

this is great info, thank you.

can you come do it for me? :D

15 years ago i was completely on top of my game in this arena, and I know I can figure this out, but it would take me a day. I have just one job that requires the most precise color i can get and the time investment is just too much for the cheap client.

Thanks for the lead, Kirk - I'll check it out.

$59 was the best deal I've seen on these so far, so $49 is a steal! Congrats to all that took advantage!

I'll have to check out the ICC/C1 and other conversions, maybe add that to the article. DNG profiles are great, provided you use software that utilizes them - but ICC profiles are generally more universal. Good stuff.

If you send me a color target image I can send you back the resulting ICC profile and you an try it in C1 to see if it does what it supposed to do. Since I do not have access to your target, I would use somewhat generic published values for the patches.

Wow I was just kidding but I guess it would work. Thanks for the offer. I use the color checker passport and have the software installed but have only used it with CS4.

I actually just received a bunch of the fabric samples for that job yesterday afternoon.
