A friend of mine has the new 7D MKii and has been waiting for the new 8.7 version of Adobe Camera Raw so that he can process his images. Adobe has released the lasted update but we are getting confused and don't know if we should download and install the DNG converter or Camera Raw or whether they are the same thing. He downloaded the DNG converter and has been trying to install it but the instructions only tell him to follow the instructions but it gets tricky when it starts asking where to install it.

Has anyone gone through this and could you lend a little guidance.
Thank you

He needs the DNG converter. Install it with the defaults including the directory to install it to. Once it's install run it, point the input directory to the source raw files, and the output to another directory to put the DNG files. Point the raw converter to the output of the raw converter.

I would not use the DNG converter unless I had an older version of Photoshop. If I had a version of PS that supported ACR 8.7 then I would update to that, and use it to process my .CR2 files, without converting to .DNG. I do not see the point of converting the files, I recall reports that much third party software that supports DNG only does so for cameras that use DNG natively, such as some Pentax and Leica cameras. Files converted using the Adobe converter would not open. It seems to me that outside of Adobe products support for DNg can be as patchy as for any other proprietary RAW format.

Thank you for your responses. He's got the latest version of PS so it seems DNG converter is not necessary. So where does one find the ACR update?
According to this link http://www.adobe.com …duct=106&platform=Windows (external link) there is no ACR update for 8.7. I only see the option for DNG converter. He simply wants to be able to use ACR with his Canon 7D MKii

Can anyone explain how to do this?

Douglas you totally rock! It worked and it was very easy. I have no idea why that page never came up in all the searches we did. Thank you again

Elements 11? It can't even be used for Elements 12 that only supports up to 8.5. You will need PSE 13 or the DNG Converter.
