Just curious why you didn't just put the flash in the hot shoe?
I don't use flash a lot for bird photography, but when I have the flash on camera, I seem to get unflattering light in the birds eye. The photos of my setup don't really portray that the flash is off center also and, depending on the distance, I use a small soft box or flash extender. Also, when actually shooting, I will move the flash further up or down as needed. I know there is a little flash reflection in the eyes in these pictures, but nowhere near what I get with on camera flash.
