Just curious why you didn't just put the flash in the hot shoe?

I don't use flash a lot for bird photography, but when I have the flash on camera, I seem to get unflattering light in the birds eye. The photos of my setup don't really portray that the flash is off center also and, depending on the distance, I use a small soft box or flash extender. Also, when actually shooting, I will move the flash further up or down as needed. I know there is a little flash reflection in the eyes in these pictures, but nowhere near what I get with on camera flash.

Can you please share ore info on the flash bracket and setup? I just did an "L" bracket, but have to mount it on my collar upside down. That setup looks perfect!!

Here's a link to the bracket:

https://www.kirkphoto.com …Flash-Brackets-Macro.html (external link)

Probably not anywhere as nice an RRS brackets (or the like) but well made and very reasonably priced. Customer service with these guys is awesome, too. Here I have it mounted to an Arca Swiss plate on the base of the grip.

Reminds me of a $15 bracket I had 30 years ago. It had a hole above the grip for a cable release.
