I have been using a Canon 500 f4 IS and a Canon 400 f2.8 IS to shoot motorsports and often found that if "an event" occurred nearby I was over glassed and missed it. I bought this lens hoping that it would address this and still provide a high level of image quality. A few laps after these shots were taken one of the Miatas got loose and hit the wall 20 feet away. I was shooting next to a girl who was using a 500mm Nikon.
