This lens was doing quite superb shooting this event.

It´s actually sharper that I was ever hoping. Also servo focusing was doing fine and didn´t let me down.

After following this thread for a while and chatting with a local photog that has had a good bit of success with this lens, I pulled the trigger on one and it arrived today. Sadly, it's been raining for what seems like a month, still is, and is predicted to for at least a couple more days.

Hopefully, I'll have some contributions to this thread soon.

Thanks to all that have shared their experiences with the lens. Hopefully, you will all have helped me to get up to speed with it quicker than would otherwise have been the case. :)

interesting factoid for other canon users i found out this week ,as some will know i have recently upgraded ?? from a canon 1D3 body to a canon 80D body ,however i found that my lens coupled with the new camera will not work with with either the new kenko 1.4 dgx HD or indeed the canon 1.4 mkiii t.c this also applies to the 7Dkii body it just comes up as a error message .even though both bodies are F8 enabled

HOW-ever if you put on a canon 1.4 mk2 t.c its works extremely well .just my luck i sold my old mk2 now gonna have to source one

Tons of great images in here! Black Fox, How would you compare the 1D MKiii to the 80D? I inferred from your ?? after upgrade the jury may still be out whether it's an upgrade or not. I don't want to derail this excellent thread so maybe you could PM me or start a new one, unless no one cares?

thanks

Ok, I got the new beast home and immediately attached the doc, updated the firmware to 1.04 (from 1.03) and made some tweaks to C1 & C2 based on recommendations from within this thread. Thnks to those that paved the way on this one!

Once done, still raining & nearing sunset the light outside was poor to say the least but I just had to try it out.

Admittedly, the test shots had little substance, but I did get an initial feel for the lens. Despite having set the OS to Dynamic, I was quite surprised see how incredibly shakey the view in the VF was. Nonetheless, even handheld the pics came out surprisingly well. When I came back in, it occurred to me that I had not changed the switch to C1 or C2 so I had not experienced the OS set to Dynamic after all.

The following test shots were handheld with a variety of exposure options.

1st shot with lens was ok, but nothing special but they got progressively better.

And two final pics from the rainy patio. So far, I am impressed with this lens. It is exceeding my expectations.

Now, if the rain will just stop!

hi mike as i virtually only use this lens i think it does have relevance ,after a good few weeks acclimatising to the new camera its starting to gel a lot better ,the i.q is definitely better thanks to 24mp and a upgraded sensor ,and now i,m growing out of the iso constraints i had with a older sensor its helping more .

the flexibility of the sensor in high contrast situations means shots that were impossible before can now be taken ,i think its even a gain over the much lauded 7d2 as i have my lads to practice with ,the 80d focusses fast with the sigma sport once the right settings are employed and birds in flight are no problem at all ,the switching to different area focus modes is a touch pre-historic as i was used to one touch for the ring of fire on the 1D3 but its not a problem just needs fore-thought .

overall the shutter speed and focus ability seem about the same ,the increased RAW buffer of 24+ shots and fast write times is a vast improvement .

so overall to sum up have i made the right move ,well yes i do think i have it works well with my main lens and others in the collection and as spares for the 1D3 are soon to be discontinued it was a no brainer

Nice start Phil. You'll note that at 150mm, it is crazy sharp. I've shot a variety of great family portraits at this range. It really shines between 400-500mm. 600mm results are excellent. And the color and contrast from the UD elements are superb. Just invested in an Induro GHB2 gimbal head for my Manfrotto tripod and I'm taking very sharp photos at all focal lengths with OS off; even down to 1/15 second in low light. You'll love this lens. It's been one of my best purchases for the money.

Thanks Darkhourse. I can't wait for a little sunshine. The poor light results form this lens are really impressive, at least in my opinion. There was a hint of sun this afternoon, so I ran outside the office to see if there ere any birds or interesting subjects. I've laways liked flag photos, so here was a quickie flag.
Mr & Mrs House Finch are always out, rain or shine & were there when I got home.

I was fortunate enough to find this Great Horned Owl nest on my property. It was fun to keep an eye on them until they fledged last week...
